Hey,
This is one of the most confusing pieces of feedback I've ever received...lol. Was it meant for this thread?
P.S. I don't smoke weed, there's no gate on the percs, and Vanguard appears nowhere in this track, in fact I don't even own Vanguard!
:) |
Hahahaha, I don't smoke weed either but I'm quite sure that he meant to put that in my Afrojack parody thread. He wrote that he was drunk there, but the percussion on my track is sidechained to the kick and it's a parody so I'm mocking Afrojack. Haha. |

By the way, I'm not the hugest drum and bass fan, but this track is extremely promising! Really interesting bassline! |

Sounds really good, but I'd still like to hear the vocal as more of the focus of the track - maybe just nudging it up a couple of dBs would do it.
And presumably you're going to add a chorus section? (the bit you've got there sounds very verse-like) Nem's suggestion of a more memorable vocal could come in there, which I think would help.
But yeah, definitely some Hybrid influences in your production there, which all in all is first class. |

Thanks for your comments!
Currently, that is all I have of the vocals (I do have another verse). I'm friends with Kirsty and she gave me those vox a couple of years ago. It was only last week that I decided I wanted to make some drum and bass and I remembered I had the vox lying around. I'm also doing a breaks track with Kirsty which has full vox.
So at the moment the part that says 'Love of my life' is the chorus, and I have no harmonies or ad libs! It's possible that when Kirsty is available again (she is pregnant at the moment) we'll be able to revisit the vocals and focus on building them up some more...
Thanks for the Hybrid comparison, very cool! : |

Let me start by saying how much I hate you. Well, OK, so maybe I'm just a *little* jealous and starstruck, since Kirsty is one of my favorite vocalists ever. ;)
Anyway, this is a very cool track and a nice change of pace from her trance tracks, although, I have to say that I definitely don't like the fact that some people pigeonhole her as a trance artist, when her style and abilities are very diverse and IMO her best works (e.g., Reach for Me, Battleship Grey, Blackout, Nature's Kingdom and Inner Sanctum with Delerium) are not trance tracks. So, I really like the DnB treatment to this track, and I'm looking forward to the breaks track as well.
As far as the track itself goes, I've listened to both versions several times and I actually think that the vocals are sitting pretty well in the updated version. This isn't a style that I'm very familiar with, so I'll just second the comments made by guys like Nemesis, Raphie, etc. and suffice it to say that I will definitely be on the lookout for the final version. Nice work!
BTW, is Kirsty planning another album anytime soon and, if so, any chance either of your songs will be included? |

Hey mate,
Thanks for your thoughts, specifically about the vocal placement :)
I very much agree with you, Kirsty is definitely not just a trance artist - some of the stuff on her Sci-Clone EP ( http://www.kirstyhawkshaw.co.uk/shop ) is almost rocky, she's very diverse.
Kirsty's been working on something very different recently:
http://thefeltdolls.com/
She's collaborated with a friend on an album of songs for children - very raw and acoustic; some of it sounds almost medieval, and I really like it.
She's also recently completed an EP with Ulrich Schnauss and has been doing some liquid D&B with other people. We've actually recorded together quite a bit, although none of it has been released yet. Our breaks track 'Aqua Love' and this D&B tune are likely to be 'Avatar One & Kirsty Hawkshaw' singles. It's also possible that a trance track we did together 'Oxygen' will see the light of day at some point. We hope to play together (locally, nothing big) soon as well.
I owe alot to Kirsty, she got me a foot up in the industry when I first started, and we've become good friends :) |

That's very cool - she seems like a very down-to-earth and generous person, qualities you don't usually see from someone with her credentials. Good luck to both of you!

Any idea where I can find this? My wife and I are always on the lookout for cool kids' music for our 3-yo son. I've actually contemplated doing a kids CD myself. |
