Hi all,

As you may be aware, on Friday Jan 28 the CRTC issued a statement calling for the revocation of CKLN 88.1FM's broadcast licence effective Feb.12, 2011 citing non-compliance on a variety of administrative activities between 2007-9.

Since 2009, volunteers, community members, programmers and staff have come together to enact substantial changes to the org's by-laws and have cooperated fully with the CRTC to achieve compliance. We have acted in good faith to restore the CRTC's confidence in the station even while being understaffed, underfunded, and in the midst of 2 lawsuits from vexatious plaintiffs.

At the CRTC hearing in May, no one called for the revocation of the license and several interveners made the case for the importance of CKLN 88.1 in promoting and protecting the diversity of Toronto's downtown community. That's why this ruling comes as such a shock!

Last night's meeting went very late and long story short we're probably going to have to challenge the ruling in the Federal Court of Appeal. First, we'll ask the CRTC to reconsider, if they say no we'll have to launch a legal battle.

The first step is to sign the petition http://www.petitiononline.com/ckln881/petition.html then pass it along please!

Here's the official CKLN statement as found at www.ckln.fm:

The Commission's decision to revoke our license is shocking, heart-breaking and, according to CRTC Commissioner Louise Poirier, "unprecedented".

CKLN has been faithfully serving a diverse Toronto audience for more than 27 years. It is a place where anyone can get trained, learn about
broadcasting and speak to their community. We have provided a place for new music, new voices and under-represented issues. We have been the
Voice of the Underground.

We were not in compliance while CKLN was off-air in 2009 and in intermittent subsequent periods but this was completely unintentional and once the problems were identified, we collectively undertook in good faith to remedy them. We are responsible campus and community broadcasters and the unprecedented decision of the CRTC to revoke our license rather than issue a mandatory order took us and the broadcast community entirely by surprise.

If this decision stands it is a huge loss for Toronto and for community media across the country.

CKLN is holding a general meeting this Monday at 7pm in the Ryerson Student Centre, 55 Gould Street to discuss the situation.

What were the non-compliance issues??

After that much incompetency I doubt a petition matters

CKLN is a disaster and has been terribly managed for years.

Thanks Del...

That's some pretty bad stuff...

I think that station needs to be put out of it's misery...

From what I'm reading, there is zero reason for these jokers to be on the air.

I'm guessing none of you have read the ruling or the statement by the dissenting Commissioner and have just decided to spew vitriole and venom without any knowledge of the facts:

Why is this station so important to you?
gl.tch
Because I've been a programmer there for nearly 5 yrs and involved in campus community radio for over a decade.

I'm passionate about underground music and CKLN has been my home, once a month, to showcase local Toronto djs/producers of electronic dance music without fear of censorship or being forced to play off a "hit" list like commercial radio!

so... my understanding is you care so much because you want to keep your job / keep your show on the air.

It's not a job - I volunteer there.

And yes, of course I have a vested interest!

after reading this article on the crtc website i feel even more strongly against reinstating their broadcast license. they should just get on with their lives if nobody seems to be capable of running the station properly.

while it may be unfortunate for a on-air programmer like yourself, it is what it is. the people higher up than you have ruined it for you.
