I'm pretty sure it was meant to be a completely different plot: They both stand up well as individual works, but yeah there's almost no comparison. Only similarities are characters and city, but after that its all pretrty different- I really like both though :)

I've actually heard the same thing, if you've 'read the Manga' then it makes more sense. I guess it's one of those films that had an specific target audience....... Yet it's still regarded as a cult classic, hmm... I'm going to have to watch it again I think.
