I'm a really into swimming, and yes I own a speedo. At the college pool they're the norm, if u dont have one ppl look at u like ur an amature, every where else watch out.

Last year i brought one along to my friends beach party, next thing i knew they had posted pics of me online. Ha ha very funny! I'm still trying to live that one down.

Anyways i dont where a speedo as a fashion statement its just comfortable for swimming.

But what really outraged me was this: Isn't the US supposed to be a "diverse" "multicultural" country, with freedom of lifestyle and expression, so that even in theory people shouldn't stare at you like you came from another planet?!

Apparently not! :whip:

LOL, where did you get that impression...??? I never saw the the "great" US of A as being multicultural in any way.

Well... for one thing, there are lots of people here from all over the world, there are many immigrants from Asia, Europe, Africa. The US is called "the meting pot," there are many cultures here -- or at least that's what everyone says and thinks.

i have been to France, Japan, Spain and Italy......and in EACH and EVERY one of the countries i went to people that lived there stared at me...some laughed at my "style" of dressing and some didnt...

Eugene i am not going get in a flame war with you because i happen to like you and you are always cool..but to be honest that happens in many places when your a foreigner and you bring your styles out..thats life...whether your in Europe, Asia, Africa or America..

And those bathing suits your talking about USED to be VERY popular in America in the 70s and 80s..thats all guys wore back then...it jus kinda went out of style here...but we had that here aswell.

Either or i dont condone someone laughing at someones style ...

hmm
but if u think about it
every1 still hangs with their own culture
because at my school, it's very diverse, cultures of all sorts
but the black kids hang with black kids
white kids hang with white kids
and asian kids hang with asian kids

So today we went to the beach, and the man's swimwear was European-style -- not the boxer-shorts that every American male wears to the beach, but the "curved" and tight-fitting swimming shorts

Well, when we were at the beach, all the Americans were staring at him, and it was so freakin' embarassing! WTF is wrong with them? Isn't America supposed to be "multicultural"? He wasn't naked, for God's sake! Can a native-born American tell me if swimwear like this even exists in the US? It seems all the normal people around the world wear it!!

I was really outraged by those narrow-minded and dumb stares that he got!

Hmmm... how d'ya know they weren't just checking out his "package" and in awe of it? :D

Hehe..... I'm feeling playful, trying to lighten up the mood. Honestly, I don't see (at all) what Speedos have to do with being "multi-cultural", especially since it's a style created by an American company and a style that was quite popular on the beaches here for a while (and still is for competitive swimming). That would be like someone wearing a kilt here in the US and calling anyone European/Scottish/Irish closed-minded and "un" multi-cultural because they study the kilt being worn by some guy walking down the street.

People still wear them here, but the "shorts" style has taken over (a) because it's more comfortable TO MOST and (b) because there is more liberty stylistically and decoratively. I don't really care about the topic, I just thought it was funny that a group be called uptight and be accused of not being multi-cultural because they studied some guy walking down the beach in tight swimwear. This whole thread is really rather comical when I think about it.

I still think they were checking him out, though ;)

First off, I wouldn't try to generalize an entire country from one experience.

It actually makes total sense. Tight fitting swimwear has never been a big hit in the states, and it's pretty amusing to catch guys showing off hairy ass upper thighs and chunky butts. It's just not the style around here.

If someone wore bell bottoms, everyone would probably stare at him unless it was 70's theme night.

It's just cultures messing. Some things will always be fashionable, and some things will not.

Saying why are americans so uptight is saying, "why do all non americans make such big and inacurate generalizations about americans?". Suppringly the anwser to both is the same. They dont/arn't, and the ones who do are rather stupid.
