I wouldn't say that Speedos are in fashion in Europe. At least not in Sweden. I never see anyone young wearing Speedos at the beach. Often Americans (and others who doesn't live here) seem to think that Europe is more 'united' than it really is. The cultural differense are often huge eventho the physical distance may be small.

Sweden has beaches?? :p

in Holland it is also normal to wear shorts btw.... I used to own speedos (when I was 10)

i dont think it always has to do with americans being closed minded or uptight. obviously our sense of style is different here than in europe. of course for some people it is because they are uptight and conservative but i gawk at guys in speedos because i think its GROSS!! soooooo unattractive, i dont want to see your bulging out at me. and the tops of guys legs above their knees are just ugly. guys in speedos are just a turn off to me. unless they are wearing it for sport~ swimming. u guys dont like seeing fat girls in skimpy clothes (neither do i) me and many of my friends dont like seeing guys in speedos. :p

hehe what a laugh riot. i personally don't want to wear speedos, but hey if thats what you want to do...

you're right, speedos aren't popular here. and i think someone hinted at the fact that they aren't considered manly. if fact, i think people believe that people that wear speedos are looking to nail them from behind 'wink wink' so there is your culture difference right there.

on a further note i wouldn't mind if the US became less conventional...BRING ON MORE NUDE BEACHES HEHEHE.

I think people with such beliefs have problems with their sexuality or confidence. And this means that such people are uptight.

eugene:

what you are talking about is a matter of culture, and i feel like its kind of misplaced to say an entire group of people is "uptight", because the culture is different.

examples:

if i was to go to japan, with all my facial/ear piercings that are visible, odds are i would get very strange looks and comments. (i even asked a japanese exchange student friend about this out of curiosity a little while ago). because in japan, that sort of thing isnt as culturally accepted. my friend had gotten three ear piercings and was about ready to go back to japan, and knew his parents would be very upset with him.

does that mean that i can call all japanese people uptight?

or how about if i, as a woman with blond hair, went to a middle eastern country like egypt, and walked around without having my entire face covered with a black cloth. i dont think i have to point out how negatively i would be looked down upon.

does that mean that i can call middle eastern/arab people uptight?

are you seeing the point im trying to make? each country and area has their own culture, their own way of living, and their own "norm". to call them uptight for thinking something blatantly not consistent with their own norm is strange, is futile because if you do that, you need to include every race, group, or culture in this world, not just americans.

well.... to put it boldly... YEAH, imo. Ok, you can't say all eastern/arab people ar uptight, that's taking it that little step too far, but I think it would be perfectly fair to say that (that part of) their culture is 'uptight'.

yes, but something that is "uptight" to you, exists because you grew up in a different lifestyle. for people in that religion, its a way of life, and so it continues.

, i dont agree with female circumcision... but for tribal groups which practice it, that is their culture. it only disgusts other people because we grew up in completely different ways, not following the same rituals or practices. ill bet there are some cultures which think its ridiculous that women are encouraged to shave their legs and armpits, a habit that is part of a LOT of our daily lives.

this is kind of digressing.. im just trying to point out that everyone is different, and calling one group uptight seems silly, because every culture is in some way or another... from someones point of view.

kind of like country bashing. i think its just as stupid and accomplishes nothing.

Floorfiller
eugene lets face it...

you look stupid in your speedo and americans are ignorant. sorry everyone i know this isn't helping the cause. but seriously, its a matter of CULTURE. the fact that you are unwilling to accept that just shows how ethnocentric YOU are and that YOU should be more open.
