underground? what underground?
hosting your events at a club is hardly "underground".

go rent an empty warehouse, bring your own sound and light and dont hire any security then come back and say "underground will make a come back".

That's what I think of when I hear "raving". I hate when people say "I'm going out raving." Oh...so which empty warehouse are you partying in tonight? Oh...you're not, you're going to the Guvernment. That's not raving.

It's just those that don't know the terminology. Electronic music = raving (to a lot of people).

the scene in toronto has changed drastically over the last few years. it has become much more mainstream and mainstream radio listeners like this type of music.

Truth. As much as I hate it, this is def. true. It is also why I haven't been to Guv is over 6 months or more. I can't even remember the last time I was there, which is sad, because I LOVE THE PLACE! But the crowd is new, and really young, and I honestly just don't feel comfortable being there anymore. I think it's finally time to let it go, and let the noobs enjoy it unfortunately. It just ain't the same...

Everyone who thinks the bookings are going down do me a favour:
-Pick your top 5 DJs
-Go check the top 100 DJ poll (popularity contest) for the last few years
-Track these 5 artists' rankings

Given that popularity = ticket sales you cant argue against the fact that the higher up that DJ is on the list the more tickets they'll sell for each event.

Now if your DJs are declining on that list over the last few years then you can establish that your "brand" of EDM is on the decline. This is why you're not seeing them at the Guv (or possible even elsewhere) these days.

Take Sasha and Digweed for example, these are their rankings since 1997 to current on the top 100 DJ poll (link):

Sasha 3 5 3 1 2 2 4 4 4 7 5 7 13 27

John Digweed 12 7 6 3 1 3 5 8 2 8 3 9 17 29

These are 2 artists very very popular with users on this message board. We can Sasha peaked in 2000 and Digweed in 2001 with VERY steep declines in the last few years. This is why Sasha was recently booked at TIL, not Guv. Not saying they suck at all, they're still both great artists but they just can't generate nearly the fan base and numbers of the guys higher on that list.

Guv is a business existing to make money, not entertain the likes of it's long term fans at the expense of not making new ones. They're booking what fills the place up at the best ratio of cost vs revenue. You might hate him but look at what Deadmau5 did on Boxing day. Sold tickets that went all the way up to $90, sold out, and were being scalped for up to $200. This is when the average big name artist has tickets going for $30 and not selling out at all...

I'm not knocking people on here for listening to what they like. That's what it's all about, find your music and and enjoy it as you please. But sometimes people are a bit too ignorant of what EDM is popular or blowing up. And just because you're not into it doesn't mean it sucks or is a bad booking.

Yeah I think you pretty much nailed it. I think the people here I have to look at the reality of the situation and realize the past heavyweights in the biz are not that huge anymore. You meantion Sasha playing at TiL...I remember James Zabiela playing there last year too. Like 7 Years ago I believe these guys were back2back playing in the main room, but I don't think that'll happen anymore now cuz that draw isn't that big for the MAJORITY of the people. Speaking of JZ, I think it was in 2008 where he played AFTER Deadmau5 in the main room. That'll never happen again today. I think the next big wave in EDM will be dubstep, and it's already happening. My friends who listen to maintream music mostly are getting into this style just now only but I think this is representative of what the mainstream thinks. Electronica has crossed over to the mainstream but it's only the certain type of dutch-house, electro-house and of course trance type of genres which is taking off. Pretty soon it'll be dubstep.

I don't think TA represents the majority, we like our EDM to be more 'pure' generally so we still big up the prior heavyweights and/or the newer guys who 'keep it real'. I certainly still like and play the good old tech house and prog house...but yeah I don't think it's as big as it used to be.

aint that the truth.

One of the many annoying "Stereotypes" that you have to put up with when talking to non edm listening folks.
