Using loops to produce a song

A mate came over on friday who has just got into production within the last 6 months or so (he makes electro, house, fidget THAT kind of music)
He gave me a listen to a song hes recently been working on and i was amazed at how profesional it sounds after only producing for such a small amount of time. I found out because the whole song except for the kick was pretty much loops and electro presets...
i went on to make a song with him and i used some loops.. this was the very first time ive ever used them in +3 years ive been producing.. we made a song SO quickly...
later that night i made another song on my own using JUST loops in logic.. i ended up making a half decent funky house track that you have probably heard pre - 05'
do many of you guys use loops? Ive always created everything to do with percussion etc from scratch...
i just wanted to know is using loops quite common within this industry? i could imagine that it would be more common in todays electro/house than trance.. i could be wrong tho... ???

only loops i use would be percussion/hihat loops. but i try my best to use them sparingly as background drums and so they could give the track a little drive. never ever touch melodic loops unless i plan on chopping them, reversing, glitching, etc. |

I see loops the way an artist would see a paint by numbers colouring book. |

you can use sample loops that you buy from the internet and make the record in half-an-hour. But if you're a musician, or if you really love music and you are interested in experimenting, and it's your life, then you have to stay true to yourself and do what comes out from your heart. |

Someone should collect a whole bunch of loops, and then we all make a track using only those loops.
You would quickly see what can be done with just loops. |

I remember hearing about a song that was great, broke the Beatport Top 10, made by I believe Steve Angello....made with nothing but loops. Let that sink in for a second.
Is using loops wrong? Not entirely, but doing an entire song using them, to me, seems lazy.
I plan on making my tracks as loop free as possible, or using only loops that I have created. |

I think most trance artist (though hihat's aren't used as much lately) and minimal techno artists use hihat loops. I don't have anything against using loops as I am not very 'principled' about the path taken as long as the end result is good. But I don't have access to many loops other than hihat loops so I don't use many.
My brother once told me a funny story. He said he knew two friends who produced music as a 'duo'. One day, one of the friends came to him excitedly showing a song his friend had started. When he played it to my brother, he immediatly exclaimed "That's 'Children' by Robert Miles." Apparently, when my brother looked at the project it was a bunch of loops including the piano from 'Children' and the other guy hadn't realised his friend hadn't created it. I think among the lessons to learn from the story is the fact producers need to have a basic backround in the classics of electronic music like 'Children'. |

don't use loops, as i don't want to use them. sometimes use oneshots if the drumkits in my synths don't cut it. you can make nbr1 hits with loops, but also without, If people are happy using them, good for them. For me (and call me stupid) it feels like "cheating" if I can't produce a certain flavour, i just work harder untill i find what i want and i am happy. Using loops, again for me, is closer to micro-dj'ing than songwriting. |

I think percussion and drum loops are fine, maybe even sampling a synth loop is fine. Making an entire track out of nothing but loops I don't really agree with. |

Well we all know that steve angello's had a lot of success with this technique.
Of course, you hit a bit of a wall when all your tracks sound the same because they're all loops. loops aren't so good for creating original sounds, make you lazy and ultimately stunt your growth as an artist IMO. Because eventually you'll want a sound that isn't in your loop library and be completely stuffed. |
