| I occasionally buy a copy of the big issue of a guy who stands out in all weathers, making only £1 of each copy he sells. He's very polite even to those who shun him and well worth the change. He's especially funny at xmas when people irish up his coffees. |

I give the homeless people money when I have it because Im not cheep.
You never know there life history and one day you could be on top and the next day you could be on the bottom.
I do it as a good deed, they can smoke it or drink it I dont care what ever makes them happy....

I remember once I was in Bristol, think I was about 16 at the time. Went in to get a breakfast from McDonalds and there was a homeless guy sat outside, must have been about -5oC outside. So I bought an extra one and took it to him, he was so ing happy, seriously a hot meal and coffee really made his day.
The horrible thing was walking back inside and all the dirty looks I got from other people, and whispered comments of "He shouldn't have done that"; like I was feeding a dog scraps off the table. It made me feel so sick how heartless some people can be. |

| only one homeless dude i give a buck to once in a while. always sits in the same place, day and night by a starbucks and subways reading books and listening to talk shows on a portable mini radio. he's actually a pretty cool guy |

i've had both positive and negative experiences giving to panhandlers/beggars. recently, they've been more negative.
late one night, after a party at ruby skye and then being at a nearby diner, was walking back to hotel with some friends and we were accosted by a bum. it was late, i was tired, and didn't want to deal with it. my friend gave him a few singles and then less than a minute later we saw the guy pull his BLACKBERRY out of his pocket to return to a conversation.
even more recently, some friends and i were heading down to atlantic city for a friends bday. my friend wanted to pick up some drogas and we were waiting for this dude to sell us the stuff outside the bar he worked at. obviously a kind of sketchy situation in a sketchy town. suddenly this wildly overweight black lady knocks on the window and gave us a sob story about her car running out of gas and needing money for gas to get home. we didn't believe a in' word she said, but wanted her to go away from the god damn car so we could do our business and leave. my friend gave her a 5. she walked across the street into the bar, instantly...........
i think the most fulfilling experience for me with a bum took place about a year ago. 2 friends and i were at a ralphs, buying 40s to play edward-40-hands. we saw a bum outside who we recognized as being there often. i bought an extra 40 just in case he said anything. sure enough - "you guys got any spare change?" -"don't have any money man, sorry. but i have an extra 40 if you want it" that motha a was so happy. he took it and started walking away, grinning from ear to ear as though to say "mission accomplished" |
