I used to long time ago.
Positive: (Awfully skinny child) asks me for money politely, i give him a 5, goes inside burger king and gets some food, before eating he thanks me once more, goes on his way.
Negative: Outside 7-11 some bitch in a wheelchair asks me for change, i give her like 4 dollars, i get in the car with my friend and he says ''You shouldn't have done that'' , i say ''why?'' , he says ''She doesn't need a wheelchair'' ... i look over as we are leaving and the bitch stands up , pulls out her Sidekick (this was back when sidekicks were the ), and goes on her way with her 3 thuggish friends, one of them looked just like Fat Joe (or is it phat joe? ) |

It was a wad of maybe $300 tops. |

I do occasionally, though there aren't many homeless people around here.
A few years ago I gave some guy a few bucks to "buy some food". About an hour later I walked into the liquor store and the guy was buying goon (cheap-as- boxed wine). The guy saw me and was really embarrassed, and actually apologised to me for lying about the money was for. I kinda just lol'd. What the do I care, right? It sucks to be homeless, might as well get trashed. |
That’s fairly minor dishonesty compared to all the times you’ve offered homeless men a warm place to sleep. |

I heard that homeless people don't feel rape. |

I hate the whole your not treating them as a human by ignoring them. Most are aggressive and they have places where they sleep and eat for free. This seems to be their "job" for discretionary income. Reminds me of pushy telemarketer that if you show any sort of compassion its encourages then to push harder. I sometimes give them a buck so they will leave me alone. Ironically the ones who are quiet, polite, and have pride are most deserving and don't get any money. Even when I give, I'm left with the feeling I've been hustled. |
Most of them, have mental health issues and have nowhere to go, most of them.
Those shelters are just a temporary fix for food and shelter, they don't address the root cause(s)... of what a person with mental ilnesses is doing on the streets and not in a mental institution.
If the dude is young able to stand up, he can get a job at the corner convenient store, him I don't really care about. |

Didn't read the entire Thread but my personal Philosophy is when a homeless person asks me for change, I tell them I will buy them something to eat as it usually happens in front a convince store or a grocery store.
I've even seen a homeless person on the side of a highway intersection with a sign that said "Do you have spare change"? "Why lie, I just need a beer." |

I remember once I was in Bristol, think I was about 16 at the time. Went in to get a breakfast from McDonalds and there was a homeless guy sat outside, must have been about -5oC outside. So I bought an extra one and took it to him, he was so ing happy, seriously a hot meal and coffee really made his day.
The horrible thing was walking back inside and all the dirty looks I got from other people, and whispered comments of "He shouldn't have done that"; like I was feeding a dog scraps off the table. It made me feel so sick how heartless some people can be. |
Yeah, that attitude upsets me too.

I give when my gut tells me to. Yeah, there's a lot of people who put themselves in that situation but there have been a lot who have just had a run of bad luck. Sometimes I'll take them to get a sandwich and if they want a cigarette, I always try and oblige then, too. There aren't a whole lot of homeless people where I live but one of the convenience stores I go to has an employee who's really sick, so I always try and put a dollar or two + change in a coffee can they set up for her. |
This is my general attitude too. Most of the time, I just ignore them. Especially the people with pets, dyed hair or piercings - how can they afford them? However, sometimes I just see that it's the right thing to do. I'm basically unemployed at the moment but two weeks ago I gave 10 euro to a guy on the train, because he was bent over with a deformed back. I can earn more money; he can't.

I also take this position quite frequently.

When I lived in the UK (10-ish years ago now, mind you) I spoke to a couple of homeless folks that are just like you describe, with piercings, dyed hair, and a dog. They had dogs because they could collect an extra amount of money from social security, almost like they had a dependent to feed. I have no idea how much it was, but that's why you see so many of them in England with dogs. They used to pool their money, buy cheap dog food so the animals stay alive, and then keep whatever was left over.
Smart, I guess |
