When I lived in the UK (10-ish years ago now, mind you) I spoke to a couple of homeless folks that are just like you describe, with piercings, dyed hair, and a dog. They had dogs because they could collect an extra amount of money from social security, almost like they had a dependent to feed. I have no idea how much it was, but that's why you see so many of them in England with dogs. They used to pool their money, buy cheap dog food so the animals stay alive, and then keep whatever was left over.
Smart, I guess |
Not as smart as pooling resources to make a living of your own. :o |

I usually do. They need it a hell of a lot more than I do.
If the person is playing a musical instrument or something...I always give them something. I'm a sucker for street performers. Homeless or not. |

| alright so yesterday night, i gave a homeless guy some change and i actually felt good about it, there was this one guy who came into burger king, and he was asking everyone if he can get some food , of course everyone was denying it, so he started going ballistic, throwing chairs everywhere, eventually he got pissed off and left (none of the employees were doing nothing about him), as soon as he did...this other dude ran into the store and started fixing all of the chairs, and i thought that was the most funniest thing ever, he later opened the door for me,and i spotted him a few bucks even though he didnt ask. |

| I don't offer help to those who refuse to help themselves. Homeless in this part of the world is just another word for lazy. |

| my brother chooses to be homeless... he has had a good upbringing and plenty of oportunity. my dad paid for him to enroll in post secondary education 4 times! he kept dropping out, never taking it seriously. He could apply for aish which is government assistance here in alberta because he has FAS but he doesn't want that either, so i hope he doesn't pan handle because he admits it's the lifestyle he chose. |

That's true to some extent, but also a lot of BS. |

I am ambivalent towards the homeless. On one side, I want to show people I am better than them by having a house with nice fence and basketball court in the suburbs, having a gas guzzling SUV, having the latest fashionable items for my sexy body, etc.: the typical 'keeping up with Jones' thing.
On the other hand, I want to show people I am better than them by driving a Prius with a 'coexist' sticker in the back, buying free trade materials, being a vegetarian, and last but not least, giving to the homeless.
What am I to do? |

| I tend to crack if they have a dog, although I'm aware that having a dog isn't exactly economically viable if you're homeless. People who come up to you and give you bull stories get nothing, though. |
