Review: Marcus Schossow at Beta (Waterloo) (pg. 4)

he pretty much just dropped tracks to get all the little ravers jumping up and down and that is fine, i should've expected that (and i kind of did...but i had my separate reasons for attending) - and this is where i separate myself with the crowd and beta in general...i don't like how the dj's play the crowd because i don't like that crowd to begin with. it's age difference and where i'm at with my music at this point in time and from my generalizations from clubbing since 06
i guess i have to really pick and choose my events from now on. i have nothing against beta at all...i love the club, the sound system is far beyond anything i've ever heard besides guv and stereo and same goes with lighting.
is it just me or are the 18-20 year olds getting more and more mashed on mdma than regular, ...i remember my first time lol :crazy: |
You have to remember...the majority of the kids there could care less about mixing or building a set. All they want to hear is big tune after big tune. |

I actually DON'T mind his style of mixing in terms of transitions. Modern tech-trance tunes have pretty well-defined mix-in points where a fatass bassline is dropped and a lot of layering actually decreases the effectiveness of the drop IMO. So a quick 8 or 16-bar transition immediately following the climax of track A right into the kick and bassline of track B works really well.
Had he played prog and mixed like that, I'd be in agreement with you. But he never played prog, so MEH.
One track he played that I really like is:
Marcel Woods - BPM (Second Mix)
You can see around 1:12:45, the whole ing crowd was clapping. It was pretty sweet IMO. |

That's why in the last few years some parties BLOW.
Whatever happened to going to parties just 'knowing' you'll have a good time regardless of whether or not you'll hear 'big tunes'? |

Yepz.
LOL. It happens to me for the same reason. I used to tracklist like CRAZY, know EVERY song 2 beats into beatmatching. Not anymore, WAY too much to keep track of...
That's why people loved the music when I started, nobody knew everything and then when you did get up to speed the dj would play their style throw in a surprise "ID" or two and the night would rock.
Too bad Schossow's set wasn't liked by a lot of you. Probably for the reason I mentioned above. Bleh. |

That's why Digweed is still one of my favourite DJs of all time. I know anytime I see him it will be a good party and he will take me on that musical journey through all the ups and downs. |

I have to agree here...the night of the week doesn't work for me but everything I've read that has been put by Beta has indicated that here is someone trying to make a genre of music work in a town which has historically had trouble attracting a significant audience.
So far so good it seems. I don't doubt once the liquor license is approved things will only get better.
