It's bull. If I listen to an essential mix I expect whoever mixing it to give me a quality selection of what he deems top notch. And him if he thinks all his own tracks are that good.
But hey, that's just what I want from an essential mix. If you want an artist album good for you. |

It's not that I don't see what you're saying, it's that it seems you're not even willing to try this mix out, despite it being very, very good. Babicz is a legend, he's been around producing for a very long time (mid-90's I believe). And beyond that, he's a sound engineer and does mastering work for a whole lot of EDM labels. The guy knows what he's doing, and trust me, he does have the music to back him up in this case. |

| Awesome, awesome set. I'm a big fan so may be a little biased. I just love his Nektar tune so much atm. |

Anybody know what kind of kit he actually uses?
And what the hell is a live re-edit of a remix :conf: |

It's old but quite informative. |

| Who goes to a Deadmau5 show to hear anything but Deadmau5 tracks? Anyway, I think if you actually listened to the mix you would realize how good it is (given that you're into that style of house). Seriously, if Babicz came to New York and spun that exact same set at Cielo or District 36 I would not be complaining! LOL |

Well The Prodigy fit into the punk aesthetics i think their fans would be angry if they did something as generic and imposed as that :P |

Was this a live set, or just a DJ set? Both have long-standing precedents: The FSOL had EMs that were basically just "live performances" of their own material way back around '94, and BT played a set of his own productions (including the ing Voyage Of Ima) in '95. Although he did at least use some interesting bridging tracks by other artists.
There's nothing technically wrong with any of this, but it certainly isn't why I tune into the Essential Mix. Some of my favourite EMs were the ones where artists played rare DJ sets and you got a chance to hear their influences or how they approached the idea. The FSOL did a set in '93, Leftfield in '94, BT had a proper go in '97 and played everything from IDM to trance to drum 'n bass, William Orbit had a bit of a mad EM in 2000. All fantastic mixes, arguably more interesting than anything played by a "proper" DJ on the show. It's great to get a rare chance to hear how these guys would operate in a different medium, and deliver sets that you can't hear them play in a club on any given weekend. |

The Prodigy is a live act, and of course they'll play their own tracks, no matter how old they are. And I don't remember them ever doing an Essential mix.
This, on the other hand, is just pure whoring of his own material, even if it's a live act recorded (and I don't think it is). No matter what reasoning is behind - whether he thinks he's tracks are unique and other stuff out there wouldn't fit, or he thinks his tracks are superior to that other stuff, it's still a douche move. I don't follow Essential mixes that closely, but when someone as great as Babicz is playing, I want to hear what are his tastes these days and what he thinks is currently good music. As far as I'm concerned, he can save this self-loving for his own live shows. |

Their first one was awesome, though.
And that second one, as much as douchey move it was, still felt like a proper journey, unique at that time (and still today). And it went hand in hand with their ISDN broadcasts at the time. This just sounds like 23 acidic techno-(house) tracks played in sequence. |

| The Prodigy have had live shows broadcast as part of the Essential Mix before, but only as part of the special "on the road" EMs where they broadcast live from a club and usually feature multiple different artists on the same show. In this case it was in 1997, alongside Armand Van Helden, the Chemical Brothers and Danny Rampling. |
