Or perhaps it's just Babicz' solipsistic (not in the pejorative sense) realization of compositional intent. In essence, since he produced most of the tunes, himself, he had some idea of how they could be integrated with one another. In so doing, he's displaying his own thinking as it relates to his productions as they stand in the context of a DJ set. |
It isn't a DJ set. We've established that much. Having some idea of how your own productions can be integrated with each other is called "making an album". It has nothing to do with DJing. |

Again, I'm not boiling it down to just that. Omar-S is a good example of a guy who plays nothing but his own work because he believes he can construct something very specific from it that he couldn't with other people's records. It's not an approach I agree with, but it's nevertheless not about self-promotion in this case. This still doesn't change the point I made about the market, and how it applies to a large extent for such a major radio outlet as the EM and BBC Radio 1. |
I see where you're coming from and that we're a little closer in principle agreement than I previously thought.

EDIT: I do stand corrected for calling it a DJ set, but...
It's a recording of a live performance (albeit with pre-recorded parts), correct? Or is it just something he cobbled together in the studio, ahead of time, without any live maintenance or triggering? Babicz' own statement about his ability with improvisation seems to imply that there's a bit more of a workload over a two hour period than simply pressing 'play'.
EDIT II: Well, I started listening when I first started this post and at the time of this second edit, I'm finding myself pleasantly surprised - not that it wasn't what I was expecting, but that it was simply an enjoyable experience. |

| I had no idea this would turn into a referendum on the state of the Essential Mix. To be fair, most of the DJs who have done them lately do compile tracks from various producers so what Babicz did is actually unique. |

is this the right place for me to say one of my favourite essential mixes is the Infusion one from 04 which was just a collection of their own productions and remixes

no, but if you have to ask you obviously haven't read the discussion. no one here is hating on anyone who prefers one or the other. except maybe palm, but he's partially mentally challenged. the question is; have you listened to a lot of EMs? there is a thread with em recommendations somewhere, good place as any to start if you haven't. if you have and the infusion one is still your favorite, I won't tell anyone. |

Most of you seem to forget that Babicz isn't a DJ, even though this recording may appear to be a live set. He has even issued a statement on his MySpace page that because in fact he is not a DJ, he doesn't want to receive promos.
And if there's anyone to blame for the artistic value, it's Tong who booked him for the show. |

I have to admit i was being a little facetious, beer will do that to you I guess :).
And not to turn this into a willy waving competition but I have listened to a load of EMs. Back in the day before t'internet when I were a nipper I used to set an alarm for 2am so i could wake up and tape them lol. And i still stand by what I said :) |
