| tubularwills, can you give some insight on the "tendrils" coming from the main funnel? are they spawning out of the lower part of the funnel or from higher up and bending into the main, pulling out the debris? |

multiple vorticies. it's basically like little funnel clouds around the main twister itself. not much is known about these. i.e. why they form, how they form, etc...
tornadogenesis is a huge research topic. it was partially the goal of Vortex and Vortex2 field studies.
basically though, when you see multiple in the sky, you know mother nature's pissed something fierce.

| I'll start praying that Topeka, Kansas gets hits with some massive tornados. So I wont have to hear about the Westboro Baptist Church. I know I know.... Kansas is in the midwest. |

Despite my rejoinder to people who said they'd be praying for Japan (or me while I was there), I'm not exactly opposed to praying. My only worry is that it may lead to slacktivism.
The reason why I still have some sympathy for prayers is because they definitely have a positive effect - on the person doing the praying. If you want to do something, donate money, and still feel there's something you can do for those affected by any given disaster, praying will definitely make you feel better.
When I see people begging on the streets, of course I feel the urge to help them. However, I can't always help everyone that asks for a spare change, let alone the ones that never crossed my path... and that's not even half of it: there's always the problem of whether or not I should even be helping them. If I were religious, praying would definitely help me cope with the situation and, unless I expect a supernatural team to do all the dirty work, it's not going to do anyone any harm. Then why bother?
In short, religious folks should stop trying to justify their prayers, and atheists shouldn't bother unless they happen to see someone leaving it all to the angels, archangels, spirits, deities, leprechauns and William Ashley look-a-likes from "the other side". |
