The standard Saffa accent, in my twisted head, is the one you can hear on District 22 :p

all the people I went to school with abroad that were originally from the middle states have your accent. It was just a couple words that you said that made me think of that, and I am really bad at distinguishing tones. But, people who live within america sound nothing like it only the ones that have spent most of their lives traveling. We call it the international accent.
It's the mutt accent. Some words are British sounding, some are Australian, and a very few are American. I think we are ashamed of it due to how the world currently views americans :p It was the choice of words and how you paused which sounded very American which is the base of the mess. Perhaps this is due to your exposure to popular US culture through media?
But, since you said you learned american english I made that comparison, I'm sure British kids who have never lived in England have a similar thing happen to their speech. It's just a hodge podge of accents and whoever you are currently communicating with will be the most dominate. Accents and socio-linguistics are something I have just very recently become interested in and I suck at distinguishing sounds but its still quite fascinating.
Makes sense. It's just that no one's ever said I sound American, and I'm not at all ashamed if I do. But yeah, the constants exposure to US English, and the formative years in which I learnt General America still must have an influence on me :)

Its definitely an unusual accent, very much public-school English/Essex sound to it, but its still got a little of the Brazilian there.
So I sound like a Brazilian kid who went to public school in Essex? :p

So I've decided to do some research and learn more about South African English. I've read some descriptions of the accent and listened to some people who are about my age (e.g. Kyle White - he's South African, right?). It does sound very familiar to me but I can't tell it apart from, say, Londonian English... except for the lack of glottal t's (i.e. when city sounds like "sih-ee"...
Never mind, I get it now :p

:p
The more you know: the British settlers sounded more like contemporary Americans than like contemporary Englishmen.

This is the odd bit: my contract expired in September, and it was dispatched a couple of weeks ago. Moreover, they sent it to a place that has no connection whatsoever to the university :conf:
Blimey... does that mean I'll have forfeited my chance to be a ninja if I mail it to Moongoose? More importantly, is there some sort of national quota? I don't want to put him in a difficult situation and make him the "extra" ninja in Slovakia that will have to be annihilated!
All right, I'm going to become a ninja first and then I'll mail you the book :D
Just read Chavez is not coming any more :(
OMG, they're spying on me! As for your question, I can pretend to speak French (worked last time I made a connection in Paris and had to blag my way out to Starbucks), but I really wouldn't say I'm competent :D
I just read the first page and it's too boring :(
Haha, thanks, but I can't sound more English than you :D
I mean, I know I sound like a foreigner who perhaps has lived in England for a few years and learnt the mannerism - but I definitely must sound like a foreigner :p
No, most Brazilians learn to speak General American. Though I did study for six months in a school funded by the British Council (where, oddly enough, most students still sound American), that's not how I got my accent.
Here's what happened:
I grew up watching British series (some of them were good, such as "Men Behaving Badly" and some were really awful, such as "As If" from which I got my first user name) and, when I first opened a phonology book in my late teens, I realised my teachers had taught me a very "Brasilianised" English (/bed/ and /bad/ sounded the same, and so did /few/ and /feel/). So I decided to re-learn the pronunciation and pay more attention to the stuff I already used to watch.
The truth is, I'm still not satisfied with my current pronunciation and even feel embarrassed to speak English in public (unless there's a humorous purpose, reason why I posted this video and the other one when I was drunk). But, thanks to comments like the ones in this thread, I'm becoming more confident about my Mockney* :p
*Lews says it sounds South African rather than English, so I still don't know what exactly my accent is supposed to be from, heh.
:stongue:
Thanks :)
I know my philosophising can be a bit feminine, and most linguists are women anyway, but my several posts about big titty bitches never made you think otherwise!? :p
