Ontario on track to loosen liquor laws by summer: Attorney General (pg. 3)

-Extra weekend night transit service
Only if we had this I would be willing to have a zero blood alcohol law for driving in exchange.
If these changes were to happen we would catch up to most of the rest of the modern world in the year 2011. |

that only happens because people feel like they have to take advantage of some special privilege they have been afforded for one night only. if it was changed to 4am permanently it would probably be nuts for a year or so and then 95% of people would be fine after that. or maybe a bit more than a year :rolleyes: |

So for these things you'll be able to walk all around the streets in the area of the festival with open booze? That is pretty substantial if so, but that's not the way it sounded to me. I'm guessing they just make the effective beer tent area bigger. To apply it to the whole area of festivals like Pride Parade, Caribana and Nuite Blance would basically be turning a good chunk of Toronto into a bar scene. I'm totally down for it, but doubt they'd have the balls to actually do it.
First thing I thought when I ready this is "why?". The changes are great in the eyes of partiers but they're outvoiced 10:1 by the MADD type crowd. Some insight was found when I read:

you witnessing this doesnt surprise me at all. chippewa has gone to comeplete hell. weve had somewhere around 3-4 shootings and various stabbings in that district in the past few months. not even worth going down to anymore in my opinion. |

Well, if this is just a "vote grab" than the government must realize that people to want these changes. And they must realize the ENOUGH people do too, if the MADD type crowd is against this and it was only a small group of "party" people pushing for it than this wouldn't be the best pre-election move would it?
P.S. And we still have Family Day too, so maybe these changes will stick... |

Absolutely, I meant the voice of the MADD type crowd is louder but not in actual numbers. For every 1 of those there's probly 10 that would like the liquor laws loosened. Argument goes:
Partier: I think they should loosen the liquor laws.
MADD: Oh yeah? I lost a son to drunk driving! I think they need to be tightened!
Patier: Ummm, well I want to drink more and party harder.
Thus partier loses the battle every time. But by all means the MADD types are far outweighed by partiers in numbers and that's where vote buying comes into play (the MADD type will still likely vote libs/ndp regardless of these changes). Same formula as Family Day and it worked so they're going for round 2. C'mon they had all that time to make these minor/easy changes and decide to do it right before another election? I'm not against the changes in any way, but stuff like this should be done constantly to satisfy the majority's needs not just when it gets someone more votes. |

Ok, so apparently as of next Wednesday the new changes take effect. Here are some of the changes:
-Restaurant and bar servers can carry drinks on public sidewalks to licensed areas such as patios
-Special events such as weddings or charity fundraisers can serve alcohol for an extra hour until 2 a.m.
-All-inclusive vacation packages can now be sold in Ontario
-Business owners can give a complimentary drink to customers to celebrate a special occasion like an anniversary
-Street festivals can allow people to leave their bar or restaurant with a drink in hand, providing specified conditions are met to ensure public safety
-Boat tours can begin to serve alcohol before the boat leaves the dock
-Businesses, such as spas and art galleries, that are not mainly in the food and alcohol industry will be able to apply for an SOP to serve alcohol during a special event
