OK then, I'll humour you.
The comic underlines the process that more or less everyone on TA has gone through for electronic music. The more exposure you get to electronic music, the more you start to notice and appreciate its various nuances, structures and components, which eventually leads to a differentiation of your tastes.
The real question, then, is the general consensus on what such exposure and appreciation of nuances is worthwhile for. On TA, it clearly is trance and other sub genres of electronic music. Thus, you get all the clashes on epic trance, brostep, mnml and so on. The Joe Biden-example is nothing more than an exaggeration of this point for comic effect, making a mockery of those who are too caught up to realize what the aforementioned general consensus revolves around in their surroundings.
Seeing as you instantly thought of "the aura this forum has" when you saw this strip, I'd say this thread is a not-so-subtle and fairly predictable attack on this forum stemming from having your tastes in music insulted. Time to grow some thicker skin. |

Look, I'm not trying to devalue the old school trance connoisseurship around here, but I don't like that they ignore the fact that the depth of an artwork is worthless if it isn't approachable. They want to live in their own little world amusing themselves with the assumption that the scene needs to be non-changing and underground in order for its content to have any sort of positive value.
Now I'm not demanding you to worship all of the newer stuff that comes on the most popular labels, let alone the DJ's that play 'em. What I'm asking you is to instead of dismissing let's say that new track from Arty as complete crap, try instead to take the 'needs more cowbell'-approach and try to go into detail what could be added/removed/changed to improve the track. maybe send those requests to Arty himself.
Let me tell you this, an approachable work of art doesn't have to be intellectually unchallenging or lack any sort of redeeming values. Remember Sturgeon's Law: Ninety percent of everything sucks, ninety percent of everything that has existed sucked and ninety percent of everything that will exist will suck. |

It is very easy to just be negative on an artist/piece of music but it actually requires some time/thought to express your reasons as to why. |

how i interpret it:
people/djs stay buried in one genre for too long, they fail to get perspective on reality.
i walked into a reggae party at a house the other night. the dj had tons of vinyl, but nobody dancing, mostly dudes. i like reggae, but the music was too raw and authentic, you would have to be a die hard reggae enthusiast nerd to appreciate it, which was the type of dudes at this party were. seriously, the reggae internet radio station we play during the day while doing chores around the house sounds a million times better than what these reggae nerds were playing.
i see the same problem in edm. its really bad because of so many sub genres. all these genre nazi/nerds dont get along, the music played at the party has to strictly adhere to their preferred genre or they leave. people have been listening and scrutinizing and over thinking/analyzing this for YEARRRRSS in their bedroom bobbing their lonely nerdy heads in front of the glow of their computer screen, grabbing THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of mp3s that are all in their little micro sub micro genre, thinking to themselves "awww yea, this one is so epic awesome, its so legit and genuine and underground and thought provoking, im going to KILL the dancefloor with this one, absolutely KILL IT!!! they're all going to be jumping up and down praising me". and then when they clear the dancefloor with their repetitive percussive crap, they make excuses like "i didnt have a properly educated crowd, ugh i need to move to a REAL city where the REAL people are that know whats up, like berlin, or london". no, you've just been locked in a box for years listening to the same crap, you sexless dingleberry. |
