Kick in mono = less bright.

Hey guys, I've a problem here... When I transform some kicks from Vengeance/Mutekki to mono it looses too much bright! What should I do? Leave it in stereo? Add bright with enhancers or EQ? Thank youuu! |

There's probably soem phase anomalies that are cancelling out the higher end when mixing down to mono.
Instead of mixing both stereo channels into one, drop one side and use that as the mono signal. |

Sounds like there are phase issues in the high end. I'd lean towards using one side of the audio rather than summing both sides to mono.
There are a number of ways to get at this. Audio editors (such as soundforge or wavelab) should allow you to do it pretty easily.
Another option is to pan the kick all the way to one side to turn it into a mono sound, then route it into a mono channel which is centered.
Yet another option, though it could be far less ideal, is to apply a simple stereo widening tool (or just a simple delay of a few ms to one side) before collapsing the sound to mono. That way the high end could be more in phase and won't disappear. The negative is that other frequencies lower down may be more out of phase. It really depends on the sample. You'd probably be able to get a decent result adjusting the delay time by a few ms until it sounds okay. |

Nice one guys! But using one side I'll not loose anything in the bass frequencies dynamics? |

If anything is lost, then it was a sample to begin with. |

If it looses the bass frequencies, lowpass and hipass copies of it respectively to resolve the problem. You could even leave the high end stereo and just make the bass mono I suppose. |

Why don't you try it and see.
I'm guessing what's actually happened is that they've applied an MS equaliser to narrow down the stereo in the bass (ala basslane or similar) and that's left the tops with a lot of information in the side channels. There's nothing wrong with that neccesarily, since tops on most systems are actually in stereo or dual mono at least, so would use it as is. |

Leave it in stereo! If anything, reduce the bass range to mono (only when it poses a problem), but leave those precious mid and high frequencies in stereo! |

First of all, why are you even doing that? Kicks out of the box don't need processing. EQ and kick layering does, but compression is rarely needed. Unless the kick is the most important part of the song and you have to squeeze the out of it. Not a huge fan of that sort of thing though. |

Just make a folder with all your best kickdrums and you'll rarely have to deal with this.
I usually have a "kick day" where I will properly layer, equalize, and pitch my kick drums. And over the years take all my best ones and put them in a folder. I usually just use waves stereo plugin to get the stereo field in mono. A lot of times however they are fine in stereo. But I personally like the centered feeling of mono. But don't forget you can set it anywhere in between it doesn't have to be 100% either or.
Well thats what I do anyway I rarely around with kicks when I'm working on a track. I have to have kicks that work already cause I can go crazy and kill a whole night just working on a couple kick different kickdrums. |
