the insurance on my 2006 eclipse GT (3.8L) is only $140 per month!
insurance in Ontario is not that bad, if you shop around and if you know people!
|
Whoa decent rate for sure.
Im paying about 500$ per month on gas as well... (Infiniti QX4 with failing transmission, body rust, cracked windshield...) |

10-15k for an STi? lofl
gonna need another 10k.
STi isnt that bad on insurance provided you have some decent history.(my g/f has an 05 STi and pays 160/month) If you havent had your own policy itll be painful for the first yr regardless of what you get.
That said I dont recommend it as a first car. Buy something cheaper to start imho...get some decent history under your insurance and go from there. You can find lots of fun cars in that lower price range.
There are lots of cars to choose from all across the board(fwd/awd/rwd) that are fun, reliable and not quite as quick as an STi(which is a good thing to start with).
Sure an older car may need a couple grand thrown at it over the course of your ownership but itll still be cheaper than a new car, youll learn (well there is opportunity to learn) and you can hone your skills on something that has much lower limits than an STi.
The STi is a pig at the pumps too. HWY it does decent but around town it sucks the juice big time. like 12.xxL/100km.
The hood scoop on both cars(wrx and STi) is for the intercooler. not the intake. The intercooler , cools the compressed air from the turbo before it goes into the engine. Lower temps = more power, less/no detonation.
Its functional even around town. crawling in traffic..of course not, but then again you arent boosting in those conditions either.
Also importing a car isnt all that difficult. And for a used car from the states warranty doesnt mean anything most of the time since people buy cars out of warranty typically. Warranty is for vw's and chryslers ;)
The STi is a great car that has a lot of upgrades over a regular wrx. Most importantly the transmission. ugh the wrx has a glass trans that likes to break. That said it should be ok for the OP since I doubt he will mod it much. Doesnt sound like the type to me.
Ive been into the car scene for a long time and the fact my g/f(who I live with) owns an STi...and I do all the wrenching on our cars myself.... I know whats up with these cars.
Head over to Toronto subaru club forum for better help about cars than here. |

Id like to be able to mod it. I am very mechanically inclined and have done most of the minor work on my car for sometime now.
Consumer reports show the newer wrx's having 22mpg which is a huge improvement from the 15 or so im getting with my pos Qx4.
Auto trader shows 05 WRX with about 100k on them going for about 14-16k
Alternatively, as a fall back. Sentra SE-R spec v's seem to be getting really good reviews as a cheap entry level car that is fun to drive...
It seems the overwhelming consensus says to go cheap... |

dont get a spec v. giant turd.
seriously just stay away from that thing.
a wrx is 14-16k. not an STi. thats 20-30k easy.
If you want to mod... and have your heart set on the wrx. I would stretch the extra 5k for the STi.
The reason I suggest cheaper is to establish some history with your insurance so when it comes time to own a car like the STi they will at least lube you up when they bend you over.
You should call your insurance company to see how much it would be to insure it.
My brother also has an STi. He was interested in wrx at first and I convinced him the same thing. Get the sti. its 4-6k more and well worth it. The wrx will never be an STi. IF the sti is what you want , get it. There are numerous improvements over the base wrx. That doesnt mean the wrx sucks though. But most people get a wrx and then try to make it into an STi or "better" but they typically dont succeed. Straight line speed is one thing(and pretty easy to accomplish) but you are still starting off on a lesser "platform" so to speak.(yes they are the same platform but the sti has improvements on the regular wrx).
Just look at the new cars. the wrx and sti have basically the same straight line speed.....but the STi is a much better package overall.
Handling, braking, durability , stiffness etc. |

Top mount intercoolers suck due to heat soak... dont know why they didnt put front mounts on the STI/Speed3
At least that is something Dodge did right. |

lol @ love child...top mount intercoolers RULE because look at how much piping there is...ZERO. think about all the piping that needs to be routed and all the ing bends and 90* turns they need to make before reaching the core at the front of the car. all that piping creates TURBO LAG and who wants that?? all the bends cause turbulence and disruption of air flow...obviously that's a detrimental factor to spool up of your turbo. top mount intercoolers have like 5" of piping to the throttle body. my big ass top mount is cold to the touch even after i beat the piss out of my wrx. lag is minimal to say the least.
anyone who says you can't build a wrx to be faster or better than an sti hasn't modded one before. i've done a lot with my wrx and can safely say that it is 10x more fun to ride than any stock or stage 1 sti...and guess what, my grand total including the car is 11 grand. that's 650cc injectors/evo3 16g turbo/walbro 255lph fuel pump/coilovers/numerous bushings & suspension components/sway bars/3" turboback exhaust/complete brake upgrade (i rebuilt all calipers and did fluid flush/new pads/rotors/stainless brake lines) and self tuned the ECU with my laptop and tuners cable. still in the tuning process of it..clutch is slipping so i ordered a stage 2 exedy and going to resurface my flywheel next week! should be a pain in the ass lol... |
