how many of you actually BUY music?

strictly speaking in terms of trance/edm. it's disheartening to know how little the average artist sells these days. and by average i mean even middle to high middle tier trance guys. im only wondering, because i make it a point to at the very least support the releases from locals as well as my favorite artists.

due to recently venturing into musical production myself i've come to some harsh realizations. i know for a fact even my close friends won't be buying upcoming releases from myself. beyond that, there's not much support from the community itself unless you're on armada/anjuna/flashover

not to give you all a sob story about it though - ive taken up this hobby strictly for myself and could care less who buys my music. im just looking for some different perspectives.

i dont think even the average edm listener realizes how much time, effort, and passion goes into what they're listening to

I buy every single track I'm going to play out, unless I get it straight from the label. As a producer and label rep, I couldn't agree more on how sad the legal music download situation has become.

i have a feeling every response to this thread from people who buy tunes will be from the label reps / the dj's / the producers :p

I'm an old schooler and i still like the feeling of opening a cd and putting it in the my car stereo and driving around and listening to it

I always buy almost all of my EDM singles. These days, I never pay for dj mixes, albums or compilations.

markus played the original, jaytech left some positive feedback for our remix though :) not bad for a first remix! fair enough on it not being your cup of tea ;)

alright, back to the thread now. >.>

I get all my music from beatport, not only are you supporting the artist, but it's guaranteed a high quality sounding track. You never know what compression or how these tracks were ripped when they are illegally downloaded. Illegal downloads is such a mess, and there is no way in stopping it.

When my first track was released, there was a mediafire link posted the next day. Nothing I can do about it. The only upside I can think of, is that it helps spread the track to more people, because most people are not dj's, and don't buy from beatport, etc, and if illegal download wasn't there, I don't think they will ever hear of the track, so in a weird way it can help. It is sad, but it's the world we live in, nothing is perfect.

it's actually pretty interesting how fast mp3's go around the internet. day of a release it's already pirated on thousands of blogs and forums. it's always cool to google and see what pops up

I have to admit, I am one of those that doesn't buy music often. If I do, it's because it's from one of my favourite labels and have been really looking forward to a release. The last compilation I bought was the 3xCD Five Years of Dirtybird (came out between WMC and DEMF time last year, I think). Planning to get Heidi's Jackathon sometime this weekend, heard a lot about it. Other than that, there are so many livesets and mixes and radio shows from my favourite guys, I don't really see the need to buy music; I spend my money on admission to see the ones that get my attention (they still get paid, so I feel no guilt really).

TBH I have no interest in buying singles either. I don't even download them illegally, I'm not a dj so I don't really need them. If I buy a record it's usually an obscure oldie. It's something my dad got me into when he gave me the first pressing of Blue Monday on my birthday a few years ago, a record that came out the year I was born and still is in mint condition, worth around $150 now :)
