is it just me or does older music trump newer music?

new music just doesnt have the aura that old music possesses. I could be an outcast with that opinion.

Well there's the basic thing where the classics of the old times are a lot better known and filtered than those of the newer times. That's probably why.
Because when you ask what're the top 10 albums of 1995 there's been a lot more discussing, listening and recommending going on for that year than there has for this year. Especially if people have only heard 20 albums for this year (and they might have only heard 20 albums for that year too, but they'll have been recomended and reviewed a lot more).
Long story short: You might only think this because junk from the past gets forgotten, wheras stuff from today it hasn't reached that stage yet
There's also the usual changes in genres, if something's more popular more people will produce it, and there may reach a stage where the old guard of genre x is sick of all the junk so switches genre.
There's also that with electronic music it's way easier to produce it nowadays, so less motivated people make more junk. There's more good stuff in general though IMO it's just harder to find in some ways. |

| Naw, it's not just you. I think people have been saying this same thing since the 70's though. There has been great stuff in every decade. Well, I can't say I recall much mind-blowing stuff happening since 2003 or so, but you make the best of what's still around and you lower your standards to adapt. I'm not sure if I'm "romanticizing the past" or if things are just moving faster than my ability to accept them. But really the that gets pumped out these days in my opinion seems trendy disposable homogenized forgettable and otherwise just ing noise pollution most of the time. I think in some abstract way this has to do with file sharing. The labels are so concerned with the 'sure thing' because the industry is in such a vulnerable state and they're afraid to lose their ass promotion something that's different. What that means is all the 'safe' stuff that guarantees an immediate return is the primary focus. So anything pushing the envelope doesn't get the exposure it deserves, with the rare exception. It's gonna be this way for a while until things sort themselves out and artists actually have something to gain from making music again, aside from the lifestyle. We're in a transitional period, waiting for the next new platform that offers a fair energetic return for artists. The talent is still there obviously people are just biding there time because they've looked over the options and decided selling drugs is a better idea. |

Because I have absolutely no idea what music you like or what you want to hear? But that response is absolutely typical of your problem - you don't want to search for new music, you don't want to put any effort in. You want someone to give it to you, on a plate. When you live in a world where 10,000 tracks are released every single day you need to adjust to the reality that the music that appeals to you isn't necessarily going to jump out of this crowd and be put right under your nose. You're going to have to find it.
