Trance.
The gawkiest of the gawky and the uncoolest of the uncool, yet people are still doing it. Sounds like a good definition of "legit" to me. |

re: drum and bass
it will never be big as 'drum and bass' outside the UK. outside the UK where there is not a real history of junglist culture, drum and bass is far too niche. Certain hybrid acts might have some success, but not playing pure drum and bass. I can see a few breakout acts, but most will adopt the slower, rocker and kid friendly dubstep/brostep formula and not the liquid or neurofunk formulae.
like you can say 'pendulum' might get big in the USA and the countries that still follow the USA (ie the most visible and accessible bands), but not 'drum and bass'. reggae was the same way, along with countless other genres. I think it's doomed to be a UK thing.

legit as in legitimate? then dubstep for sure. cant tell you how many children ive seen that have picked this stuff up (the ty stuff).
legit as in excellent? then it gotta be ... mmmmmmmmm dunno. the ratio of sick to astic is about equal in everything i explore (ambient/idm/techno/everything in between). |

Yeah, if you want to get all postmodernist deconstructive on this thread, but "coolness" is an especially arbitrary and subjective concept. As you said yourself, one definition of coolness involves exclusivity, and my whole point is that drum 'n bass can cover just about any definition of cool you want. |

Well, the UK still has a huge cultural influence, bested only by the US. But sice it's been years since the states' EDM output has been anywhere near prolific, the (western) world has followed the UK in EDM trends for decades now. D&B got a big boost when pendulum hit (or swayed above) ground here as well, attracting the huge indie/alternative crowd who are basically (and sometimes regrettably) the benchmark for coolness.
Regardless, it's losing major ground on dubstep. So i'd definitely pick that one for this threads' election. Regardless of what the majority here thinks - since when has aggressive-visceral-bordering-on-non-music music ever been popular here? - It has seen momentum, daring creativity (attributed to electroclash influences) and has left other genres that are rusted shut to their established etiquettes far behind. That makes it cool, at least for now.
As far as absolute legitimacy's concerned. I don't think any genre fit's the bill. |

I'm not even sure what I mean by legit. It was just the first word that popped in my head to describe the genre that is not necessarily the most popular (black eyed peas does not equal legit), but the alternative/"underground" EDM scene that garners the most respect as an artform AND has a substantial enough following to put more than just a handful of producer/enthusiasts and their girlfriends they dragged to a showcase event at a divebar.
The word "art", to me is more than a noun, its a compliment. Right now it seems all the genres have fallen into a lull of stupidity, so the lesser of the evils seems to be the marcy/hot natured/soul clap/art department etc scene. Despite it being a slow boring marathon of retards, it's still in better taste (imo) than the indie electro scene (does that scene even still exist? you know, the non prescript glasses, pbr, and steve aoki?), brostep, or whatever else. Its the least tacky, and closest to genuine artistic expression (again, imo). IOW ... legit. |
