Its true its all about the music when you go to a club imo i don't care if the DJ uses traktor, vinyl, CDJS, Serato or a iPad as long as the music is good.

Just Dance !

Guy has some good points but waaaayyyy too much anger lol. At the end of the day though it is what it is there's downsides and upsides to the situation today versus the one 10-15 years ago. The city has tons of e DJs as well but who's forcing you to go to them? Just stick to the people with talent actually getting paid proper wages and screw the rest.

One thing I will agree with is general clubbing (not edm as the crowd is completely different) in this city is soulless. Go to Richmond and it's kids trying to get as mashed as they can. Go to King West and it's a bunch of douches going out to say they went out. Yorkville and it's all people trying to act richer than the next one. But none of the average places are filled with people going out to just relax, dance, have fun etc. There's also the hordes of hungry guys who go out to aggressively hit on girls who have no interest meeting guys in clubs. The "I'll hit on 30 girls cause even though the first 29 shut me down maybe the 30th will say yes" type. This consequently turning girls off of going out in the future (sausagefest creation imo). Bottle service to the extent it's present today is another massive detriment to the scene. The average club in this city is a mess farrrrr beyond the $100 DJ is the bottom line but as anything else you pay for in life if you don't like it, don't buy it. There's still enough good joints in this city that despite the mass of ty ones you can still pick and choose your good times easily.

Well, I do understand what he's trying to say but definitely disagree on a few things.

The scene has definitely changed over the last 15 years, of course, and that's just life. Hell, if we were still throwing raves with 15,000 people than I can guarantee no local DJ would be paid anything less than $1000+ and they would all have the skills. But we don't live in that world anymore. There are TONS of new DJ's and inspiring DJ's that want to learn how to play. Yes beat-matching was the first essential skill you had learn on decks, but it was by no means the ONLY skill you needed. How to mix, program, and understand the crowd are the key tools any DJ needs to learn. And unfortunately you can't learn all those in your bedroom, you need practice in front of a crowd. And I can also guarantee that no successful DJ is going to offer a apprentice program, that would never happen nowadays. So what are these guys supposed to do? Sure using a laptop makes learning easier, but they need to play out to hone their skills. That's why I think it a good thing that are these small lounges/clubs in places like College St where these guys can practice. If they get paid $50-$100 (which isn't likely unless they bring some people as we all know) that that's fine, it's expensive being a DJ with equipment and music ect. And these places aren't really clubs, there is rarely a dance floor, it's just a place to play. Now, none of the proper clubs in our scene are doing this. You won't find a newbie DJ being paid $100 at GUV, FW, CZ ect.....nor will you find DJ's with no skills. The guys at these clubs who do use laptops (not everyone does of course) use them because they can be MUCH more creative with effects, looping/sampling, and playing 3+ tracks. All the guys at that level can beat-match, but not having to do that lets them put more energy and focus into the music. I have never used a laptop, but I can definitely see why others do.

If everyone is complaining there is no new blood coming up the ranks, why is everyone bitching about these sorts of avenues where the new guys can learn? You can't expect new guys to move up if new guys can't learn the trade? And....there are LOTS of other guys who get tons of play time who are very talented in this city. So there is the new generation of DJ's making there way up.

I do agree with a lot he said regarding bottle service ect...

+1

Parkdale used to be my go to area to just relax and have a good time out. But, even that's gone now, its slowly transformed into suburban kids rocking dress code. Still, good places and times can be found, but its a not like it was even 5 years ago.

He wasn't a cool guy back in the day, nor is he one now. Good job on coming off as an irrelevant old-timer though.

lol no

also his claim that the "top end" of DJ pay is $100-150 isn't true either... the low end is double that

I've never personally heard of anyone, ever paying for a DJ gig.

the traktor/beatmaching argument is so 3 years ago lol

this guy gonna tell Richie Hawtin he's not a DJ? what about Marco Carola? please
