Yeah after raving about the Highline after the last event - I pretty much wanna tell this place to go fck themselves. If there was an f'ing law I could see them pulling the hard stop at 4am but theres not and someone (I assume it's ultimately Highline's call) showed not just M&S54 but the whole crowd a huge amount of disrespect pulling a stunt like that.
Good job with the croutons btw - classic!! haha |

but what if the next DJ has a different BPM coming in? Say 10 Bpm faster or slower.. |
If thats the case, the promoters didn't plan the night properly. I highly doubt though, that there was much of a BPM discrepancy between the djs who played at Highline this past Friday.
For sure, there are times when it's necessary for a dj to stop the previous dj's music and start over. And I think at shows where there is one sole headliner, it totally works. But to have every dj stop the previous dj's track and start an intro is kind of lame IMO. It just puts all the emphasis on the whole "superstar dj" aspect of the night, and takes away from the actual musical progression of the night a bit.
Then again, this is what the trance crowds really seem to be into these days. So what do I know? :toothless |

Im sure creative dj's could come up with a non-beat transition :)
If i had CLR tickets i'd be seriously worried at this point btw.. Hope they dont do that again.. or else they better lock down their crouton stash ! |

| I got to Highline around 9ish, and there was at least 4 fire trucks parked outside, it took them awhile to leave, and since that happened during " whats his face" show, he did a bunch of encores to make it up to his fans., which made the party start late. |

Feel like I need to defend the break in between sets for a minute since I've had this discussion with many a DJ in the past..
Before anything - yes, as a purist I absolutely agree with you about the flow of the night and in a perfect world I think it's the best way to go. Unfortunately the reality is that most people on the dancefloor aren't really paying that much attention and have no idea when a new guy is behind the decks. As a DJ that's a big problem since if you really rock it they may just think it was the last guy and not bother to look you up, or if the guy after you is really terrible they might think you dropped the ball completely and never come see you again (all while you weren't even on). I can't speak for the international guys of course, but as a local it's impossibly hard to grab the crowds attention and to make them want to come see you on your own. That first track you play is the most important you'll play all night since the average person decides if they're going to stick around for your set 1-3 songs in. The stronger impact you can make in that first 10 min, the better chances you have to keep them around for another hour. On top of that, I also honestly think it shows a lot of respect to the guy before you to let his song play out and give him props to the crowd. I've always really appreciated it when DJs do that for me, although conversely I must admit I get really peeved when they cut my last song out mid-way through lol. |

ugh, what a weak looking crowd. such a shame with that lineup as i'm sure the music was heaven. not unexpected but when will trance crowds catch up to the house crowds, if ever? or are we just forever doomed to 4:1 ratios with most of the 20% better suited to plowing fields than a dance floor? i'm sure i will be called all kinds of for this comment but you are full of if you try to tell me that is totally insignificant.
trust me, i go for the music as much as any of you, but it SO much better when the crowd is more evenly spread out and the crowd can qualify as at least not offensive looking |

and then what? if i'm normal looking? ugly? stunningly beautiful?
i'm sensing a bit of anger with what I said, so I'm asking, was anything I said about the typical trance crowds off-base? is it not possible to have a real discussion about the looks of a crowd without someone getting offended? it might be too much to ask, but please, if you take my post personally, leave your own insecurity issues at the door |

| isn't it pretty ironic that a person who wines because others are judging his taste in music is judging the crowd because of what they look like? lmaoo what a jackass. |

I think you can call out the real problem without being offensive. There's a big difference between how the 'house scene' and 'trance scene' party. I went to Nick Warren at Cielo on Thursday and Armada on Friday. Completely different experiences - and I'll quickly add that Nick Warren was a much better crowd. By that I mean, we were there for the music, boys and girls both. I had a lot of great conversation - I met lots of new people, and I danced my ass off. Were lots of us ed up? You bet! But we never lost sight of why we were there.
On the other hand, I bet you if I asked half the people around me at Armada what DJ was on, I'd just get met with a blank stare. I had to stumble over the cuddle puddles to get to the bathroom. I even saw a guy laying down in the middle of the dance floor. I mean, really? And for sakes, stop taking off your shirts. When it starts to become about something else and not about the music, its obvious. It should always be about the music... and I even think its disrespectful to the DJs. I'm not anti-rave, but its not something that will appeal to everyone, particularly at a venue like Highline.
And just for good measure, I'm not talking about everyone at Highline or anyones subjective level of attractiveness - that shouldnt even be up for discussion. |
