Some good reads here guys. As Corjay said, a lot of people go through the noisy, more energetic youth music (electro, dubstep, trance) before finding the more refined stuff. That's why I try not to hate on them. Still sometimes it's fun in the right context. Sounds like Erika lucked out and started off on the right musical foot ;)

Great thread indeed!

Lots of peeps reminiscing tonight...I just got off tribe.ca and we're talkin 'bout back of the 90's funk house days.

The very start for me was early 90's with hip house mix tapes coming from dj Guy Boulé from Palladium, Québec City. Also listening to Kraftwerk's ``Robots`` endlessly on a cheapo Canadian Tire tape player. I'm half German, half Québecois, but always lived in Ont, so I guess you can say I have EDM in my genes ;)

Was given Altern8's cd by a friend from Windsor back in my univ days and still love it to this day:

None of my friends wanted to go to a ``rave`` in the early 90's and took me until Nov '94 to twist a couple of arms to go to our first massive in tdot - ``Total Recall`` by Syrous. It was in an airport hangar. Pretty much life changing. Never looked back. Even went to some Hullabaloo happy hardcore events in t-dot, had custom-made phat pants, biggie beads. Fun times.

A bit prior to that, I was Chris Sheppard's biggest fan, checking him out at BPM, around '92 - the current location of the Guvernment. Jaydee's ``Playstic Dreams`` is still etched in my mind and soul. I was in the loo and the bass was resonating like an 8.0 earthquake.

I used to spin at a club in '94 and while the other dj's were spinning top 40, I took a chance and snuck in Wink's ``higher state of consciousness`` and the floor erupted. Pure 303 bliss. I've spun a few small one-off events in Ont, but in the last few yrs have chosen to just go out and enjoy the parties.

Since '94, I made it a point to not ``burn out`` of the scene like many I met and always (well, most of the time) spaced out my outings a few months apart. For me, it was to always keep the outings special. I knew I had to travel several hrs, so made sure I really knew the talent or the quality of the event. Sometimes, I thought I'd ``grow out of it`` (the scene), but hells no, it's who I am. Like many of you here, I met my closest friends via the scene. Went to 4 wmc's with them (05, 06, 09, 10), did the white isle twice (01, 02), DEMF this yr and last, will try BPM for 1st time this year, and although not really an EDM event, went with other friends at Burning Man a couple of months ago (yes, I was forever trying to find Burridge, Troxler, Lazarus, Glaude - but kept missing them !!). I always thank the EDM scene for the wonderful close friends I've made (including Darknessbrotha) over the yrs, and the unforgettable experiences. Although I've yet to meet quite a bit of you off this board, I hope I will have the good fortune of doing so in the near future.

Born in 88... when I was 4, I used to ask my baby sitter to put this record on once a day (apparently it's still ok to play this if you're Luciano) :p

Mortal Kombat cassette for 6th birthday... I remember playing Halcyon + On + On during "bring in your favourite song" in grade 1 music class.

Cheesy techno and house compilations until 2001, when I started lurking TA... cheesy trance sets for a few years afterwards.

Progressive, house, minimal, electro, dubstep (no wobbles), tech house... and here I am.

One of the first events I went to was Hawtin + Villalobos @ Piknic in 2006... first all nighter was sasha and digweed at the pepsi forum in 2007 (ouf what a great party).

I missed out on a lot by growing up an only child in the west island with ZERO friends who listened to this stuff. There was such a stigma with EDM back then that I kept it a secret until I was 17.

don't get me wrong, from 16 to 19 years old, i was going to dome, extremes, vatican, la boom most weekends...i had my commercial phase listening to usher, ja rule, 50 cent, p diddy, fabulous, kanye, etc...although i always preferred some good ol' biggie before going out hehe...

even now, put on notorious thugs and i'll get goosebumps all over and still try to rap along with it (i know, major lol...)and that song will prime me to go out hehe...so ya, commercial hip hop and r & b dominated my life for most of my 15-19 years old era.

from 12-15, i was full-on pop obsessed: bsb, nsync, hanson, britney, christina, jessica simpson, etc...however, during that time, i also religiously listened to blink 182, our lady peace, oasis, weezer (still one of my fav bands today)...so ya, rock and pop at the same time hehe...

before 12 years old, obviously i was listening mainly to what my parents listened to: stevie ray vaughn, the stones, the beatles, pink floyd, john fogerty and the creedence clearwater revival, jim morrison, jimi hendrix, james brown, some depeche mode...i could go on and on and on...my dad has a real passion for music and sound (he actually owns sven vath's sound of the 2nd season haha), he's a hippy at heart, so i learned from him...he always had new custom built speakers coming in the house, new amps, new turntables, etc...that is his passion. i rly wanna bring him to stereo, just once... i really truly believe he will thoroughly appreciate that room and its acoustics, etc...one day!

at 4 years old, i was put in classical piano training, that lasted until i was 14. i regret it now every single day that i did not continue.

i guess that's basically my musical journey haha...i also love mariah carey, lauryn hill, macy gray, incredible voices...

but in terms of electronic, yes witty, you're right...i was very lucky to have met the people i did...and when i did :)

You know when you remember back your parents trying to get you to draw/play musical instruments when you were a kid, and me personally I didn't feel like doing it, I just wanted to play outside with my friends lol... But now you think back and only if you spend the 10 years of your youth doing those things you could achieve something really great by your 20s..

I know this cause my little sister started drawing early and actually liked it now shes 19 and an incredible artist.

I had a friend growing up whose brothers were about 15 years older than us, and they'd been listening to house for as long as he could remember, so he grew up on the stuff. He liked cheesier stuff (euro dance and happy hardcore) and would always be blasting that in his basement when we'd hang out at his place. When I was 16 (in 2005), I listened to a lot of metal but had been getting bored of it. I'd never really been into EDM, and basically treated the stuff he played as background noise until one day he showed me this track 'cause he found it so hilariously awful:

We laughed about it at the time, but something clicked. I went home, listened to it again, and ended up on my computer for hours 'till about 6am just looking for as much of it as I could find. I asked him for more mixes of anything EDM related, and fell in love with harder sounds (gabber, speedcore, hardcore, jungle). A few weeks later I went to my first rave (a jungle all-night party in a ty venue outside of Ottawa that we had to get to via rented school bus) and never really looked back. We'd regularly tell our parents we were sleeping at one another's houses, get friends together, take one of our cars to drive to Toronto or Montreal for all night raves (underground ones, or things at places like Government where we'd get in with fake IDs) and drive back on no sleep the next morning to be home in time for breakfast.

My friend and I ended up starting a promotion company to throw our own events the next year, and spent a few years doing that. Last one we did was an all night event in a community hockey arena outside of Ottawa in 2008 with 700 people, full on nintendo decor, and some UK and US headliners.

I spent two or three years listening to a slew of underground rave genres (anything that was hard and over 160 bpm), before slowing down and getting into house and minimal techno. After seeing Benga & Skream at Piknic in '09 I got curious about dubstep and started listening to some now and again, but seeing Scuba at Piknic in '10 clinched it. Now I pretty much exclusively listen to UK bass genres, but I still like all kinds of EDM and like going out to see any artist that's good at what they do.

Love reading these stories :D

Since I was a little kid in elementary school, all I really listened to was Metallica , Nirvana, Pantera etc. Never really knew wtf my friends or classmates were talking about when they discussed music. I always hated mainstream it seems. My dad was a hippie from the original acid days in California so he pounded all the old school stuff in my head. I never really appreciated it all until now though.

When I was in secondary 5 my older cousin told me he went to this place Aria and took speed. He told me it was the greatest night of his life and that I should go with him one day. After that story he got me a bit curious about this techno music :gsmile:

Not long after that I was learning full power about EDM. I started lurking the Aria message boards and than made my way to the Aria Mirc chat room haha. That chat-room as funny as it sounds, changed my life. In there I met almost all the people from the scene that I know today.

Somewhere in 2003 the big day came, Armin Van Buren and Preach at Aria. My first night going out, EVER. I went completely sober and had a blast. Since then I never turned back. I had a mix of sober nights and nights sponsored by Merck Frost. To be honest I don't regret either but I definitely think getting cancer saved me in a way. It stopped my destructive behavior and brought me closer to the music.

These days im pretty much retired and live in my own techno world with my vinyls from the 90's. :gsmile:
