It seems to be all the rage these days. Complete nobody/noob dj's coming out with custom fonts/logos for their name.
When will this incessant branding end??? |

Is it because we're all sick of Times New Roman? No, it's because everybody and their dog is a ing "DJ" these days and if you want to set yourself apart from the wannabes you need to brand yourself. You want to be remembered for something more than just your actual mixing work because the market is so saturated.
Oh yeah, and it looks cool on fliers.

I'm not really against it. Being a graphic designer I don't mind seeing logos to identify their 'business'.
However I dislike when Helvetica is used, and that goes for.... EVERYTHING. |

Do you actually dislike the font itself, or just the fact that its used for everything? |

This indeed. Ite especially prevalent in college towns... i feel its often perfume on the proverbial pig- not to say there aren't talented DJ's out there with heavy branding.

When done tastefully. Not through brash theatrics...

Bands have been doing it for years. So, I suppose its only natural that DJs eventually would too. |

It's used for everything. And it's apparent the last 5-10 years that it has become the DEFAULT font for any design problem being proposed.
I love the font, its beautiful, timeless, modern (usually the reason why people use it), its thicks and thins are pretty much perfect and it has an unbelievable amount of uses for many things and for that reason, I cannot use it in a single piece of work I'd like to produce for personal or school.
That's just my opinion if people would like to use it then that's up to them. There isn't much thinking involved in using it. I do however think that is can be used incorrectly. You can see that in the new branding for The Gap and see what I mean. I looks more 'discounted' or undervalued than it used to be. It looks used in a similar way as Fido, and Fido used.... oh wait a minute...
I could go on and on but I don't want to sound bitter like I just broke up with my girlfriend. |

Actually, after doing some research I found out that I stand corrected and they reverted back to their original logo.
FROM WIKI:
quote: | On October 6, 2010, Gap debuted a new logo in an attempt to create a more contemporary presence in the retail market. The new logo was made with Helvetica typeface and did away with the blue box that had become iconic with the brand. There was a public outcry against the new logo, especially in the graphic design community. The company returned to its previous "blue box" logo on October 12, only a week after the new logo's debut.[52][53] Marka Hansen, the executive who oversaw the logo change, resigned February 1, 2011 |
