While most of that philosophy got lost in the 90s, acts such as Carl Craig, Drexciya and UR in US, together with B12, The Black Dog and Kirk Degiorgio from UK, kept the spirit alive and well. Unlike house, techno is in constant state of change - kinda like technology from which it draws inspiration. Even in these days, people like Surgeon and Andy Stott still make albums that are both forward thinking and envelope pushing in the vein of these old principles.

Neither is better. Each has its time and place, and more often than not they compliment each other very well if put together in a good set.

Seriously. I don't find late 80's acid house to sound anything like 70's disco at all. I always gave house credit because it's been a lot more versatile than most other genres out there. It can be deep and soulful, or it can be funky or hard. Even US hard house and UK hard house have slightly different feelings to them. I may not particularly like the current incarnation that mainstream house has become, but I will always respect it because it has lasted throughout the decades.

On the other end of things, I have noticed that many techno fans and practitioners have a marked tendency to get puffed up with po-faced high seriousness about their music. They can be as bad as classical snobs, really.

What exactly makes that Chic song disco, except bass riffs? Even the bassline isn't very groovy. Compare it to Le Freak and Everybody Dance, and you'll get "late night, driving home from disco" music for chilling.
