If you could..

Rewind time and go back to a point in your life to effect your music abilities / career what would they be and how far would you go back?

Would you go back to when you were 8 and buy your first synth? Did you already have one?

Would you take more music theory classes in school?

Would your single devotion be music growing up? Learning all there is to know?

Do you think you'd still love EDM with all the different genre's of music and the lifelong study of it?

I was just curious. If I could do anything I'd study more music. I'd be in band instead of choir. I'd take piano lessons and most certainly would own a pair of turntables at a very young age.

What about you?

Exactly. There's no reason you can't accomplish something now. The only thing holding you back is yourself.

Having fewer wardrobe malfunctions at gigs would probably be at the top of my list. Oh, and falling off a stage and breaking my big toe after one too many, yeah, that could've been avoided.

I started music at an early age and never had any delusions of grandeur, so I would say that there isn't much I would change. Although, I did get screwed over by two particular bandmates back in the day and, I should have known better in both cases, so if I could do it again, I'd probably shoot both of them. :)

Being an old guy, I'd have spent a hell of a lot less time drinking in my teen years and a lot more 'playing and learning and saving for new toys'. I cannot stress enough to all you young'uns how massively it sucks to really start appreciating this (for me) hobby so late in life.

I wouldn't have ever taken music in a professional direction (barring a freak accident of composition) but I look back and realize all the years I spent on recreational pursuits that I never enjoyed NEARLY as much as this one. And God, the money I spent...

Of course, back then all the modern goodies didn't exist and the cost of entry was prohibitive. Today we'd love a Jupiter 8 priced at 3K retail...but back then that 3K was like 9K today. No DAWs etc.

Bottom line for me anyway is Since I can't go back, I can at least serve as a bad example and a warning to others ;)

If you like it and you're young enough, learn every damn thing you can now, regardless of how boring you find it, lest you end up an old frustrated guitarist in a digital world having to play catch-up ;)

The first question which you have to ask yourself is:

Do you love what you do?

If you do then everything ales is not that important, you will/may not become millionaire but at least you will have you personal satisfaction.

How would this improve your musical skills?

Just an addition. I'm a metalhead. Always was, always will be. Iron Maiden - end of discussion ;) But I grew increasingly bored with what metal has become since 2000ish. That said, I love all sorts of 80s synthpop. A couple years back I just couldn't stand listening to what metal had become and decided to expand my horizons. The only 'music' I have a serious hate for is gangster rap. Any idiot can (and does) achieve success simply by swearing, degrading women and waxing philosophic as to the virtues of cop death.

Hell, I even like cry in the beer Country by comparison! But back to the point. EDM (depending) seems to 'adopt' a little of all genres. It has the speed and complexity of metal or classical (arps and such), the catchiness of pop (medloy/hooks) and so forth. And yes, before I get slagged, those are rare by volume, but they do exist.

Some people like only Merle Haggard, some like only Bach. Some are rather fond of Cattle Decapitation. Different strokes. EDM is no different, but IMO, at it's best, it encompass a little from a wide background. Cant get bored from that unless you REALLY work at it. But it sure can springboard you into music you may never have considered before.

Wish I would have made playing out my primary focus. Real life doesn't happen sitting in your room alone hunched over a computer

Should have picked up studio monitors first. I have a bunch of old material that just isn't mixed well, and it sucks because it's damn good material

Should have done more research into the gear I was buying. So many unnecessary purchases

Should have done more research in general

Most everything else ties in with real life decisions, like I could say not getting more done, but that had a lot to do with working so many hours. Maybe MAKE more time for music.. and get more supportive friends

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to be a writer or a scientist. Music is all i've known. Well that and soccer. I could of played professionally had I taken that more seriously. But I really only played because my dad loved soccer and I was just really good at it. It is nice to be good at things.

I often wonder what it would be like to be average. I honestly can't think of anything i've ever tried that i have not been really good at. ACtually one thing i am no good at is relaxing. You will not ever find me chilling. The second my mind is not doing something, it starts going on an ADD trip and I get panic attacks. I even have mental exercises for times where i have no distractions.

Ya i know everyone says that but like it is just earie how as a kid and teenager, I could just do everything everyone else did better in less time with less effort. School, sports, music. And i didn't have the dreaded super dork curse that usually goes along with that. And i'm great looking. And every year it gets better.

i'm awesome. I need a room.
