From Indio to Los Angeles

So I am flying in with a group of friends on Thursday for Coachella. Rather than waste a day by the pool of the house we rented, I think we should go to Los Angeles. Now, I haven't been since I was a teen. We get in early on Thursday. I was thinking we could do the following:
Venice Beach
La Brea Tar Pits
Mann Grauman's Chinese Theatre
Hollywood Walk Of Fame
We would leaving from Indio around noon. Any advice on routes, traffic to avoid, places other than those above to go visit.
Thanks in advance.

its going to take you more than two hours to get to LA because you will be entering as rush hour is starting, add in some logistics time from the airport to a car, and you'll be sitting in gridlock. on your way back to indio, you will hit the coachella traffic. have fun with that... (coachella traffic starts around 3pm/4pm and continues until really late and completely s all over the tiny indio freeway (I-10)
not trying to all over your plans. LA can be a fun place. there are no alternative routes to/from Indio. highways places to avoid: 101, 15, 405, 5, 210. IIRC, rush hour in LA is 3pm-8pm, and will be gridlocked from 4-6pm.
I'm spending time in LA before coachella as well, but I'm doing it wednesday and thursday morning, planing to be in indio before 2pm on thursday
good luck (you'll need it) :)
e: and to get to the places you want to go you'll have to go all the way down 10, it actually might not be too bad during that time, at least until you pass the 5, then you still have 5-6 miles (it's been a while...) which will assuredly be awful
and i'd take venice beach off the list. you'll have to deal with the 405 for that one, and... lol the 405... |

| i'd also use google maps non-live traffic predicting to see how bad it is on average. i haven't lived in LA for a couple years, so my info might be out of date if they've done any freeway improvements (yeah right though, this is LA - just typing this out made me LOL) |

So I am going to hit Coachella traffic on Thursday evening? I would've figured they would travel out on Friday morning. We would be just coming in for a few and then out. This is what I came up with:
So we fly in at 10:30 and grab the rental, head to the house after stopping for groceries, out of town by 1pm latest
13:00 - 15:00 - 2 hour drive... to the Venice Beach so we hit that around 3pm and stay there for an hour visiting/shopping
16:00 - 16:20 - 20 minute drive to the La Brea Tar Pits and chill for an hour
17:30 - 17:40 - 10 minutes to Manns Chinese/ Walk of Fame
19:00 - find a spot to eat.
20:00 - 22:00 - 2 hour drive back home by 10pm.
Does this sound possible to do if we avoid the highways and stick to surface roads once in LA??? |

It's possible... but I would probably add 10-20 min to your LA drive time (especially Venice to Tar Pits - that will take 30-40 in rush hour at LEAST). Then on the drive back, like Mitz said, expect to hit Coachella traffic on I-10. But overall this is definitely feasible - if you want to check out LA, you should just do it. You might get home at 11 or midnight, but it's worth it if you want to sightsee. |

maybe...
16:00 - 16:20 - 20 minute drive to the La Brea Tar Pits and chill for an hour
20 minutes to get from venice beach up to la brea?? hahaha..
17:30 - 17:40 - 10 minutes to Manns Chinese/ Walk of Fame
reasonable transit time
19:00 - find a spot to eat.
20:00 - 22:00 - 2 hour drive back home by 10pm.
might work

if you stick to surface roads/streets its even worse |

Just great. Well, it's either veg at the pool all day and wonder "what if we would've went to LA" or take the risk. How many lanes is I-10 once we get near Indio?
And how bad is it really by Venice beach, traffic-wise? |

Pretty much take all your times and double them, to be realistic.
Easily going to be about 4 hours each way to and from indio coachella |

| Yea, not a fan of spending 4 hours to make a 2 hour trip. I guess we will just have to see how quickly we can get out of the airport and to the house. I really want to not sit around at a pool all day and second-guess not going. My gf and I are game for traffic if it comes down to it. However, I'm not 100% sure about the others that are going to go with us. Will have to speak to them to give them the info y'all have given on here so far with the traffic issues coming into play. |
