DJ Mark Farina bumped off at Marquee

When people say “house music,” they’re talking about one of two things. Either they’re referring to the largely underground, groove-heavy electronic music subgenre infused with R&B, funk, world music and disco … or a catch-all description for any song with a 4/4 dance beat, especially those on the pop charts. And when a Vegas club claims to champion house music, you can bet it means the latter and not the former.
This differential became apparent on Saturday, June 2, at Marquee Dayclub. The popular pool spot had scheduled and advertised an afternoon exclusively featuring authentic house music DJs, co-headlined by west coast house favorites Miguel Migs and Mark Farina. But when it was time for Farina’s set, he was asked to leave the decks.
So what happened? “It was the end of the afternoon and management made a decision to reschedule him for another day,” said a rep from Marquee. However, Farina said on his Twitter account that his crewmember was told the dayclub’s manager “was getting complaints from their table service crowd.” And, according to an attendee, Farina was replaced by another DJ who began playing more commercial house.
This is hardly a common occurrence for a dance music veteran and pioneer — or even at Marquee, where we’ve heard and enjoyed real house music in the past. The spot famously opened with electronic dance music on the weekends — a first for Las Vegas since Club Utopia did in the mid-1990s — and openly touted its house credentials. But it’s also not the first time a respected national DJ has been bumped from the decks by club management. DJ Jazzy Jeff was pulled from the Surrender booth in 2010, reportedly due to his musical selections, and in 2001, the former Club Ra benched house duo Deep Dish after an athlete VIP demanded to hear hip-hop.
Marquee, which led all national dance spots in earnings last year, doesn’t make the majority of its dough at the box office or its bars — that $70 million largely comes from its bottle service sales and the rental of its cabanas, both typically costing a visiting party in the thousands. While it may still be a universal faux paux for Joe Clubber to walk up to a DJ and request a song, I’ve heard multiple times about VIPs waving their big wallets around, trying to treat a club like their jukebox — and sometimes, they get their way. Even Deadmau5 has his price, as the electro/prog house titan reportedly netted $100,000 for dropping Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On a Prayer” at XS last year, upon a VIP’s request.
If Farina’s assertion is true, the incident couldn’t have happened at a worse time for Marquee: It’s one of the host venues for Electric Daisy Carnival week, which starts Tuesday and is threatening to overtake Miami’s Winter Music Conference as the big go-to dance music confab in the U.S. Now’s not the time to have your musical integrity called into question. Farina may have been reserved and resigned about his ouster, but if underground house legend Danny Tenaglia — who once berated sound techs at the former C2K in front of a packed club — is so much as looked the wrong way by the bottle service clubbers he so loathes during his June 11 gig at Marquee’s pool, expect a lot more noise and headlines. |

I have heard of a couple others getting the talk from management about what they were playing and warned if they didn't change, the boot was coming.
Hope it doesn't happen when Teneglia plays |

If it does, heads will roll and a good amount of us will NEVER return to the venue. Danny T has more cred in this industry than 05% of the DJs that are residents today. Anyone in the industry knows it.
If some patrons complain, then they didn't do their research. Frankly, for a venue to do anything like this is . A promoter booked a person for a show for a price; the venue has a contract and has promoted a day / night. If people don't like it, then do their research about who is playing where. It isn't hard before you book a table.
The two-bit has-beens that pull this should be kicked in the balls. It's just plain simple bull . Now, I know for a fact I'm only going to Marquee for Danny's day. I thought about going at night for the Chuckie show to wrap it all up, but this pisses me off so much. No more business from our group. |

| Hope it doesn't happen for DT either as I will be there just for him. |

remember 1) DT has played Wet Republic multiple times so not like he hasn't done Vegas pools before
2) this is a special one-off Monday EDC party... VERY different from a regular Sat at Marquee. so the crowd going to this IMO knows what to expect... very different from the weekend crowd at Marquee that frankly just wants to party and isn't that particular about the actual dj. |

i disagree... a lot of people at that party just wanted a fun Sat afternoon pool party at the Cosmo... and apparently Farina didn't deliver what they wanted. I'm sure 90%+ were NOT there to see Mark play they just knew that Marquee is a fun afternoon pool party. So the club did what they had to do... remember if the crowd was loving his set this would have never happened. |

IMO being that this party is a special Monday afternoon event, i don't think its that big of an issue. If it was say Sat or Sun that's different... but as its not i'm not worried. |

Just another incident that proves that the club scene is vegas is an absolute joke. The only reason its getting so much recongnition worldwide is because they are throwing stupid money at the djs, resulting in the djs all talking on twitter about how vegas is the and the scene is thriving. DJ's that have spent years developing a sound are ready to change it on a dime to get into the vegas rotation. Pathetic, but just makes all those epic years at ICE that much more memorable!!
P.S. I think the arguement could be made that Mark F is just as much of a legend and pioneer as Danny T, especially here in the west coast. How the hell do you give Mark F the boot!?!? |
