switch to mac, or stick to PC?

Hold on, this is not a Mac v/s PC debate, I've got the fastest PC you can imagine with 30" 2560 * 1600 display and all the good stuff

However, I now got an iPad3 and I've played around with the new AIR and I'm more or less sold on the design and ecosystem.

Nice AIR (only core i5 though, Ivy bridge) or Mini i7 with Thunderbold display, thunderbold PCIe cabinet for my RME HDSPe MADI and off I go.

Question however is, does the latest Apple OS run 64bits? is it flawless, like ROCK solid, no error 38's or bombs etc etc

My Win7 system, though utterly boring, runs nearly like an appliance, no BSODs or anything.

So, beyond the design and ecosystem, is a fully loaded i7 mini + thunderbold screen a good move? with an AIR to replace my XPS L702X?

Also does the new AIR run TRAKTOR 2.5 with S4 without glitches?
I did spent a lot of time to get it running without pops on my XPS.

I guess the question is, while one should never change a winning team is the switch worthwhile? or do I open a whole new can of worms

BTW HACKINGTOSH is not for me, too many little things that don't work, too many tiresome install procedures, only to find out that wifi, bluetooth, sleep or Intel Optimus is not working. So I don't want to discover hackingtosh.

The hardware is just pc hardware after all, and it has its flaws. After months questioning my network, I discovered that my 2 year old macbook pro had a wifi problem, acceptable for most, but unacceptable for constant wifi use such as controlling the mac with an iOS device.

My 24" Apple LED display imploded after 24 months and apple asked me 661 euros to get it repaired!

So hardware wise, get a warranty extension, don't question, do it! Software is another story.

It is stable, just like windows 7 is rock solid in the right hands. It's 64 bit, it's been for 3 years now. what they call BSOD is called a Kernel Panic on the Mac. In the last 2 years I had ZERO kernel panic and my computers just ran fine, 10.7 is here.

Kontrol S4 and usb 3 don't go well together at present time and users are waiting for a reaction from Native Instruments as the problem is chipset-related.

A mini is a very good choice, those computers are simply awesome, the Air is... well, a well designed computer if you can get used to the screen size. But By all means avoid apple displays.

AND GET APPLECARE. AND 8 gigs of RAM!

i would get a 2011 macbook pro used rather than the new one. The fact that you can't upgrade ram, the fact that lion is a piece of ... I would wait to be honest. And retinal display is pointless for audio. And the latest OS lion is far from solid. I honestly dont 'know anyone that is using it. It is apple's vista.

2 imac 27s is what i would get.

I have a hackintosh and it works fine, If I didnt want to go down that route, I would buy a few mac mini servers (one at a time as I could afford them!) and link them all up using VSL. That way you can use mac & windows software at the one time!

Always buy something which will work with your workflow (PC is my favorite so far) + you can always get another toy like iPad3 or else.

Cheers

I don't get it. What exactly is the reason for a change :conf:

he changes his mind more times than i do when i put together a cute outfit to go out.

I don't know how anybody finds Lion anything BUT rock solid, It's ridiculously speedy and I've had no issues with apps crashing or slowdowns or anything....?

Mac OS X has been 64 bit longer than Windows has been, actually.

The S4 should work beautifully with the Air.

not true. well half true. Mac OS could use 64 bit addressing but not actual 64 bit apps. So pc was first before macs.

Regarding lion, there are just a long list of issues with so many plugins, interfaces that given that it adds nothing in terms of performance, what is the point. I mean in the audio world , you don't fix something that isn't broken or if it is broken, you don't don't update to something that won't fix it. Lion does none of these. I honestly don't know a single person running lion.

Well I think it just depends on your workflow. I use Launchpad and Mission Control and everything because I have a Magic Trackpad. Full screen apps are also nice because they let you completely focus on what you're doing and you don't get your attention pulled away by anything else.

I think you're just stubborn ;)

i think you run a dinky a setup that would work under any circumstance. I am not stubborn, i am a skeptic. When i hear nothing but bad things from lion, and see nothing but beta releases for lion, well for me that sort of spells out that it isn't quite what it needs to be,

Well sure I don't have tonnes of outboard gear but I mean, I don't think it makes Lion that developers don't update their plugins to work with new operating systems haha.

People who develop music software are notoriously lazy when it comes to things like that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, AKA if you want everything to continue working, don't upgrade your OS lol.
