Yea there has to be something that is mentally handicapping most of them, their political platform is the most obviously hypocritical yet none of them seem to realize that...
Probably because 90% of them only support it because it would legalize drugs and are too stoned to pay attention to the other parts of the platform that would make life in any country that implements it a living hell on earth. |

| I would say it's less the stoner demographic, and more the disenfranchised Republicans that have filtered over. All I ever seem to hear them say is some vague nonsense about "liberty", and that we need to gut the government. |

True for the older supporters, but the younger ones always throw up "he [referring to Ron Paul] wants to legalize everything" which is fine... but then they throw up the "he also wants to stop the corporations from controlling government" which is where I just pretty much go into a blind rage and want to start punching people. |

This is what my friend is like.
He's a very bright bloke, a political science/foreign affairs major that was the best student of his semester. Yet he seems to trust the "market" and the driving forces behind it in a way that I admire, but can't relate to. |

All joking aside, to bring the conversation to something you could relate to, Brazilian markets (outside of government regulation) have been some of the most remarkable markets I have ever seen. They bring together tons of goods at incredibly cheap prices, not to mention everyone gets along with one another. It's pretty sick that as soon as you go from one of these markets to one that is more regulated by the Brazilian state, the prices (to no surprise to me) go through the roof.

Growing up in Brazil has taught me a lot about how disastrous governmental meddling can be for the economy. When our economy opened up in the early 90's loads of new goods entered the country and competition increased the quality of the local industry (although, unfortunately, it also killed off some of it).
I'm not convinced getting rid of the government is altogether a good idea though. If Fernando Henrique Cardoso improved the country economically, it's also fair to say Lula is responsible for more social equality... something we badly needed. Social programmes like "Bolsa Escola" and "Bolsa Família" is pulling millions out of poverty, and this has itself given the economy a new boost... even though the prices spiked during the process :(

Well, the prices have spiked in Brazil for a lot of reasons; high tariffs on imported goods, monetary inflation, just to name a couple. The availability of credit in the country has been out of control. It seems like the government there is taking a page right of the USA's book and doing all of the things that brought the US economy into an economic bubble that ultimately busted.
At any rate, I just wanted to point out how you can absolutely relate to the driving forces of the market and that the free Brazilian market (or free people I should say) in particular is an awesome thing to be a part of and not as scary as some people think.

| I think a lot of Libertarians are probably people who would be liberals, except they were raised under the idea that "liberal" means "lazy homo hippies" and can't subconsciously overcome that... or something. |
