So much so that I'm actually starting to suspect that it's a matter of equipment (yes, that old excuse)

I can hear what I want to hear, but I'm just not tweaking the way I want to tweak.

Pick any relatively recent trancey loud uplifting track and there's a crisp airy sharpness to the to end I'm just not achieving. Usually if it's a simple mix issue then I can A/B it out with some careful referencing and a bit of tweaking but this particular issue seems to be eluding me.

Is there a case for running a well mixed track through some good outboard gear? There is a reasoning behind this hypothesis, and that's that my recently purchased JV1080 sounds better than Omnisphere. Cleaner, crisper, airier and just nicer. Converters ftw.

My monitoring setup is not brilliant, perhaps it's that as well, although I'd really rather blame myself rather than the tools but I'm running out of ideas.

Take a listen to these two. They're just sound demo's and not finished in terms of structure and transitions, but the mix won't be changing much.

Then go and pick anything recent and behold the difference.

I also think my bottom end is tight enough, but that's almost certainly a monitoring issue which will be fixed soon enough so i'm not too worried about that yet. Although I'm feeling that one will effect the other.

Didn't read your WOT, but I'm guessing you could solve the problem with a MB Compressor on the master channel. Or if you wanna be a purist about it, and leave the master untouched, route everything to a bus before the master. ANywho just pump up the highs to a desired level. Bad practice, but works.

Do you know anyone with any monitor devices that have sharp highs?(maybe you can give them a go) I heard the Adams excel in this. Sharp headphones also can work. The akg 271 are not sharp up there, where as the 141(mk1) are. I find it helps a lot.

Add a touch of whitenoise to your leads.

Have you tried the 17k/12k Air knob on NastyVCS?

Harmonic enhancers?

I really don't think this is a single technique suggestion. It probably sounds arrogant but I do think i've reached the limits of my monitoring setup (as per the mighty MSZ)

It's not so much tone or dialling in as space in the mix that I can't accurately hear.

It's actually easier hearing the issue on the K271s but I only use those for finding the odd rogue frequency here and there and I usually mess the mix up if I try to fix on there as i'm not used to the soundstage. Maybe I need to spend a little bit more time with them to see if it makes a difference.

You're really not very good at trolling.

It requires timing, wit and at least some intelligence. You have none of the important ingredients.

Shush now, and move on.
