Any place you move to on this planet could be better.
Relatively speaking, Canada isn't too shabby.
And I don't consider myself Canadian, even though I have citizenship. I'm just basing this opinion off of what I've experienced living up there, what people that have since lived there told me and the general consensus about the country.
People get so wrapped up bitching about where they live they forget about the things they should appreciate. |

LOL, its cute how you canadians get all worked up when valid criticisms are thrown your way at the social constructs and certain policies/regulations.
It's like you really believe you got me figured out with that reply. |
It has nothing to do with you bitching about Canada and everything to do with your lazy and bitter attitude towards life.
Why not just move to one of those mystical countries where you get paid well to sit on your ass and take 6 months vacation every year? I mean, it worked out so well for Greece... I hear Spain's a great place to work too. |

I'm not saying its terrible, its a fantastic country to live in if all you plan on a stress free life, but the problem with that it is TOO stress free... its sterile.
I know what to appreciate; the free healthcare, the polite people, the safety, the comfort, the great economy (relatively with todays ty global economy), post secondary education options (theyre great), the great care of people (theres a HIGH tolerance towards people with disabilities, poland for example youre ed otherwise). I could go on and on... but thats irrelevant. Im not going to boast about thats fine.... its not broken, so it doesnt need to be mentioned. I mention what needs to be FIXED.
But the last three years ive been travelling quite a bit and its been a real eye opener, and after some time in Norway, I am absolutely floored how well the WORKING CLASS is taken care of there. The Canadian government doesnt give a about employees. Ontario Law states an employer doesnt even have to give you a reason for firing you, they can just dump you to the curb and thats it, even if your fulfilling all the requirements of the job. There are too many loopholes in the system for employers to get away with way too much. Add to that the ty 2 week standard vacation time per year and life becomes very sad and repetitive.
I'm tired of 2 weeks of time off... Its 6 weeks standard in Norway and about 25 days in Germany. More or less the same elsewhere in Europe.
The fact is, the human body needs at least TWO WEEKS before it even begins to feel relaxed. Canadian employers dont typically give both the weeks off at once as they dont have to. So with 7 days off, its no wonder why so many people flock to Cuba all the time, its the only viable solution for a vacation. You know, I'd like to see more of Canada myself, but when a domestic flight costs 500 dollars or more to Calgary and considering $150 per night at a hotel, im not going to piss away that much cash on HALF my vacation time in Canada.
The job situation *REALLY* needs to change. Spam said get a job and stop being lazy. ing idiot, I worked 75 hours a week at my last job without complaining. My pay was *good* but it was only when my manager left the company and a consultant was brought in to give me the boot that really pissed me off. The 75 hours/week of doing work i wasnt hired to do (though still creative) and all the extra hours WERE NOT paid (literally zero overtime), was the ing piss of. I've gone through company bankruptcies and the mass layoffs some of you guys might remember from HBC a few years ago, those never bothered me..... only until recently did it hit hard how ed up the regulations are for WORKERS RIGHTS.
They'll instill ridiculous bull regulations like drinking laws until 2am and force everyone out of bars at 3am like dogs only to wonder why so many cops are needed at that time.... a simple ing fix, but when it comes to improving the quality of employment, a pretty important issue, it gets on. I've done my part two years ago with politics in canada organizing rallies, but it was evident how passive canadians are to issues in canada, there wasnt much support. Seeing how this issue would be even more difficult to tackle, I've lost will and wont get far on my own (I had a team last time). So, while many of you may say 'shut up and leave canada if you dont like it' which is about the most IGNORANT thing to say rather than take the criticism and work on a solution to IMPROVE the situation, I'm thinking of leaving it as is and actually packing my and taking off.
I'll gladly take the 6 weeks mandatory vacation time, all overtime hours paid for etc. if it means i have to pay high taxes. If I'm to work 9-5, I expect 9-5..... not 8-10pm on a daily basis for the same salary and watch my life fade in some ing office so the company president can get rich off the poor schmuck pulling in all the revenue.
*END RANT* |

Idiot.
Read my previous reply above, I've pointed out your stupidity at least once and explained why this kind of logic of yours has no place. I was sure youd make such a statement and without much surprise, you fulfilled it.
Youre a role model citizen, if the government told you to jump im sure youd answer with 'How high?' If someone made criticisms, youd tell them to leave only to satisfy your superiors.... LIKE RIGHT NOW in this thread. You really are an ignorant simple minded fool.
Those Greece/Spain comments werent even necessary, as I'm pretty sure you know all about the situation except for what you hear on CNN. |

LOL, 4 extra weeks is huge though, but no, thats not the only reason. It is especially enticing with their high wages and the value of the NOK, at 6 weeks vacation it makes travel quite easy for Norwegians... a must for me. Their economy is great and is set to be so for a long time. Their job security is even better. Its actually difficult to get fired and layoffs aren't common. Firing someone just because is illegal (unlike in Canada). Unemployment rate is only 3%. Audits are done on the regular on employers. All overtime hours are paid for at 200%.
Theres more obviously. I've lost my job 3 times in the last 4 years, and the past year I went back to school to add web development to my skill set (not that i have a problem finding work in graphic design alone, its my ty luck with KEEPING work; bankruptcy, mass layoffs, 'department restructuring' thanks to a consultant and loss of manager) hence expanding my qualifications and hopefully landing a better job. I'll be staying away from salary though.
But hey, its a lot easier for TA members to just flap their gums like they know all the details only to look like internet forum jocks. (not you specifically). |

I'm a journalism student. If anyone is going to struggle finding any kind of worthwhile job, it'll be me. I'm not stressing, though. It's all about branding yourself and paving your own path in this industry, and I've been doing quite well at doing that, so far.
People worry too much about working for someone else they forget they can create their own jobs, especially when it comes to involving writing, design, etc.
You know your situation and what's best, so do you. From the sounds of it, though, moving is not going to fix your problem. |

I've been getting quite a few freelance jobs recently, I'd love to do more of them but its difficult finding new clients as an emerging creative. Working for someone would definitely fix the situation in Norway (or Germany). I've had terrible luck... plus I need to get away from the sterility here, er there (im in Poland atm). |

I'm only familiar with Zywiec. Good beer.
My father teaches middle schoolers and coaches "professional" football (American) in Poznan.
He loves teaching and coaching, but the religious influence is too much. From what he told me during his last visit it sounds like a 1800s America. |
