Is trance dying? (pg. 5)

I think it's a different situation here in north america than it is in europe.. here it seems like trance has remained with the same popularity for quite some time. Definately progressive is becoming more popular, but i dont really think it is converting trance fans over.

like other people have said, trance isnt dying but is evolving. and so far I like the route it's taking.

no, trance is not dying, it is huge in japan, that's why ayumi hamasaki is releasing so many trance albums

and IMHO trance is still big in uk, and house has been dead for 10 years already. that's why M People are not selling anymore :-< (i used to like M People)

I'll apologize now for all the misspellings. I should also add that this is totally my opinion. If you don't agree with it, fine, but at least respect that it's my opinion.

Trance isn't dying, it's being diluted to the point where the bad will soon become the status quo.

I got into (I mean really got into) trance about 5 years ago. The first CDs that I ever listened to and got truly sucked into were the early Gatecrasher mixes and Jerry Bonham's first Interpretations CD (seriously, if you don't own it, find it...now.) To this day those CDs do something for me that can't be duplicated by music being produced in the past 18 months.

Try this. Go and listen to any mix from the past year (to help prove my point, listen to any of the AvB - A State of Trance Mixes) then go and listen to Chicane - Live at Palladium. While you're listening to Chicane really listen to it. Listen to the magic that's created by his music, the atmosphere that comes from that. For me, that is thebest live set ever. Nothing could possibily come close to the aura or feeling I get when I listen to it. Now keep that feeling in mind...don't forget that feeling. If you feel even close to how I do then you now see what's wrong with trance now. For as good as any live set spun by anyone is now, it just doesnt compare with what was being done just two years ago! DJ and producers are stuck on making money or making their labels happy by playing their latest presses no matter how bad they really are. So many of these tracks that come out now are plagued with horrible vocals (which should never be there),cookie cutter melodies, and just plain bad production killing what once may have been a decent song.

And yes, there are still some good songs coming out but really think about it. If it's only been two years and things are this different think about the next two years. I'll put my money down that you're gonna have some Britney Spears vs. DJ Tiesto bull.

hmmmmm, i agree with some. yes scene is changing, progressing i might say. but in holland and germany trance is still alive.
personally for me, trance is now sounding more and more same. compositions are alike.
it is harder to find beautiful tracks with something original nowadays. and i am still very interested in trance from years 96-99.
best for me. in modern electronic music i more interesred in harder stuff. like new hard trance and hard house.

Recently I got sick a bit from trance,I started thinking :"Damn, why I spend money on CDsif all those artists do is press some buttons in some music prog, and keyboards.I got sick of all the same tunes, nothing new,and this cheese is all around with the same sound and samples and the girl singing,I'm talking about lasgo,Ian van dahl and others.I simply got sick of all electronic music and moved back to "real instruments" music.
I hope there will be some new releases that will addict me to trance again, just like in the 97-2000,when I got addicted to trance to cstart with.
Damn, you have so deep thoughts about trance, you made an entire philosophy, and to think that people say that trancers are dumb people who don't understand music.:stongue:

A lot of good thoughts here,I think I should contribute also to show that I care about the future of one of my favourite genres of music:

This problem is not new.The overhanging danger of trance growing stagnant has been there ever since epic trance started to decay in the late 90s.But the thing that always saved trance from dying,is the fact that there are always a lot of creative and talented producers out there that continue to deliver the goods. And the evolution to the more progressive forms that happened in 2000 has also helped trance to recover as a genre.Unfortunately, the problem remains.Too many producers are lazy and only want to make money, and hence loads of trance gets pumped out every day. But,luckily, the good producers that deliver the goods also remain, consistently giving us the creativity and freshness in trance that is so desperately needed.Hence,I have personally no fear of trance dying yet, since these producers always will be out there, giving us the real deal. And perhaps trance will evolve again if the number of bad trance releases reach the limits of what is tolerable. In that case, let's just hope that it won't go the same way psy-trance did...

And another thing that one should remember is that "dying" is a very subjective statement.Just because one person liked the 99-trance much better than the more subtle and progressive trance tune sthat dominate these days and thinks that these are crap, doesn't mean that trance as a genre is dying.A lot of people here seem to think that trance as a genre is dying when it loses its appeal to them, whcih is quite unfair.Hey,you can't please everyone...;)

i personally think its in a cycle of fading out right now. i mean i dont even like trance anymore. its appalling to me how generic all the new 3 drives, armin, pvd stuff seems to sound now.
i spose for the 'hard trance' addicts its live and well, but i was never one of those.

pvd fan originally, tiesto and ferry, but tiesto disgusts me now. oakie isnt even a trance dj, he's a just a huge corporation that plays whatever commercial crap he feels like.

with albums like starecase and sasha moving in new directions, melodic and progressive trance fans like myself will have to accept new genres. ive embraced pure breakbeat. some embrace holden.

so i cling to way out west, max graham and silver planet as remainders of the sound i love.

and dont flame me, everything ive heard from armin this past year sounds appallingly the same. same from PUSH/MIKE/Plastic Boy too. HORRIBLE!

listen to ANY trance set recently and tell me it stacks up against magik 6, or pvd live @ home in london 2000 EM

aside from the few gems in the e like eon - pocket damage, and project exor (etc.) 99% of producers out there are following the same paint by numbers garbage, trying to rip off that ferry corsten synth.

trance (in its basic form) will HAVE to grow outside these lines, or it will perish..

on the other hand, there are just a couple producers who are/nt quite prog but still give me hope.. e.g. mark shimmon, dave swayze..

but the vast majority of trance-y talent has gone absolutely to different varieties of prog. parks & wilson, timo, tarentella & redanka, yunus, futureshock.

that about sums it up, i think.

I'm really fed up with all these north americans that claim they 'discovered' trance 5 years ago and now whine that trance is so dull and uninteresting. Wannabees!! Take this: Europeans do not like all that r&b/hiphop Ja-Rule/Eminem e coming out of America either!! Trance (either Dutch, German or English) is evolving and very much alive!

I only got into Trance in a big way (got access to broadband from the University :D ), so I've only really seen this year developing.

Sure, Trance did sound more trancey in 1999, but IMO, a lot of those songs were very samey. They all had a similar synth to them with some vocals on top.

But this year, there have been many different styles of trance going around.. all Trance, but totally different.

And then an utter classic like Sun Decade - I'm alone comes out, and wipes the floor with everything that had gone before. :)

Trance will evolve. Some wont like it, some new people will appear. It'll balance out in the end.

And as long as this site keeps going, the hardcore group of elitists will remain.

bah, i think you all are nostalgic about 90's trance. There was just as much produced then as there is now!!

I listen to good trance produced now and then, I will keep listening to all of my tracks until i grow sick of it, thats when trance dies for me!

Everyone likes to press the panic button and say that their favorite thing is going to end, well ya know what, stop listening to it then, I don't care.

Exactly. You forget the tunes.

In 2004 we'll be saying "Why cant trance be like it was in the magical year of 2002. All thats done now is !!".

Then we'll have this thread again. :)
