I'm really looking forward to doing it, but I'm myself a bit short on money these days :( |

I think the incentive is to help in a way that is of minimal cost to yourself. But i agree, it seems like a minefield of potential scam artists. They claim a 98 % rate. Hopefully they have some means to deal with the eventual problems that are guaranteed to happen. And also, as russell mentioned, i think it is extremely important to know what your money is being used for. Finding out that your money is being used by a religious organisation to rent the soccer field for sunday stoning would not sit well with me. You know how dangerous a slide tackle is when there are rock on the grass? |
They let you pick who and what you are lending it. I chose a young prostitute in training who needed money to buy roller skates to get her way down to the marketplace where she can sell her self more easily. |

Teach a man to fish or something. Where is Matt when you need him.
I just imagine a lot of people will abuse it ruining it for those that need help. I honestly haven't really investigated so I don't know the details. IS there a way to make sure the money is spent in the way described. If i'm paying some kid to get a skateboard which is totally cool and then find out he got a long board and propecia mustache cream, i would feel cheated. |

| It's the tendency we have to walk away from anything that would look bit like spam and/or a scam. Although it is not the case with kiva, most people will not take the time to verify this. |

There's usually a follow-up, and there's plenty of information about who's asking for the money. For example, there's some guy in Georgia who needs a minibus, an Ugandan shopkeeper who needs to buy commodities, and the like. All these people are borrowing money so they can make more money - and pay you back as a result.
This is solidarity, not charity. |

I've done it, lent $100 in total on top of the free 25.
If I don't see it back, which I don't think will happen, it's only $100. |

Just you.
"Gee, in the same amount of time it takes me to type out a typically smarmy message board comment, I can lend someone in need in a developing country $25 of someone else's money, no strings attached, but I think I'll act my usual dickish self and deride it, topping it off by making gross assumptions about the character of those the money goes to."
Hey, at least no one can accuse you of being inconsistent! |
