Progressive House undermined by Beatport?

Aeonism
Hey guys,

thought you might be interested in the latest Aeonism blog post regarding the undermining of progressive house by Beatport.

Maybe you agree or maybe disagree?

http://aeonism.com/2012/08/31/progr...ed-by-beatport/

As a progressive house producer and fan, I find it alarming the types of tunes that are topping the Beatport Progressive House charts. As I am writing this, Dirty South & Alesso are number 1 with the track “City of Dreams”.

Is this really progressive house? I would think not. It does not resemble any of the features I would associate with Progressive House (warm synths, subtle uplifting transitions etc): So why are Beatport categorizing these types off tracks as progressive house? Anjunadeep would be the biggest prog house label that comes to mind for me and yet there is not one release from them in the top 10.

Finally to illustrate my point and concern that Beatport might be assisting in underselling and standing on prog houses toes, contrast the top 10 with the usual Beatport “10 Must Hear” tracks. I always agree with the “Must Hear” section in that they are most often quality and rightly categorized “Prog House” tunes. But I have serious concerns whether any of the chart top 10 tracks should have been classified as Prog House. Hopefully a new genre term is created to put these into it instead of suppressing true artists of the genre.

Currently listening to the following as I write:

nice one, the real aeonism?!

i must say 'The Phoenix' is an absolute BOMB! have been playing it heavily for the last while.

has a real 'orange theme' dark vibe to it. it blows your head off at the break when played as loud as possible... those synths are mindblowing! that's what i got into dance music for!

the historic 15th century period feel of the track is awesome.
real classy and gritty production. very well done on that.

and on the situation you describe... yes, very depressing!

it's always the throw away cheesball garbage that sells. in fact, if your stuff is selling, it means you are on the wrong track :eyes:

sad for sure.

This has been discussed so many times before.

Thanks for the feedback..Yes this is Aeonism. Started a blog to share some thoughts and some tutorials for guys interested in music production or want some quick tips. Plan on sharing some synth presets that were made too.

Thanks for the compliments on the track. :-)

You have no real idea what "progressive house" is either.

there's quality, then there's trash. that's all that matters.

this guy makes quality. i urge everyone to press that button on The Phenonix... it's truly awesome.

system-j you are a snob, and every track i've seen you post has been sub-par, you like to get tied down with technicalities... but what have you done for dance music?! all :o

Haha, wow, I hadn't looked at those prog house charts in years. You're right, they are pretty dire. Some of the tracks are just plain old pop records with a longer breakdown and heavier kick drum.

:wtf:

I dunno, current prog has basically sounded the same to me for the past four or five years, though, so what the heck do I know. It's like everyone started using the same ten synth sounds as each other and never really stopped. Maybe I'm just too out of it to notice the distinctions.

I wouldn't really call Anjunadeep a great example of progressive house. It is difficult to categorise, but to me most of their releases float somewhere between deep house and what used to get called 'funky' house.

The Soundprank and Sasha mixes of Spooky 'Belong' are a good example. I don't like to say Soundprank 'dumbed it down', but in essence it's a small part of the Sasha remix looped over and over into a short, sweet catchy melody you can hum along to; you get the idea just by listening to a couple of minutes of it. You couldn't say the same about Sasha's Involver remix.

I quite like the sound of 'The Phoenix', not quite sure how I'd classify it though.

I have no idea how those tracks end up in "Progressive House" instead of just "House", and it has been a problem for a while now. Beatport needs to create a "Big Room" genre label for the types of track that fall into that category.

anjunadeep has some great stuff. anjunabeats has been dead for ages. its output is pathetic. in the old days, it was a byword for quality.

Jaytech - Djembe & Andrew Bayer - You are fantastic tracks.

'You' in particular... that is DEEP and a masterpiece!

Anjunadeep? Lol.

They were relevant half a decade ago. Now they are actually jumping on the 'deep house/hipster house' bandwagon. Their releases are just typical candy-kid prog (if they aren't "deep house"), nothing more.

you can't control how people misuse language. THey distorted the meaning of a term and that is that. The music you associate with the term surely still exists and is being made. On one hand, the number of micro genres in dance is ridiculous but for some reason, people seem to be quite selective and only love things that differ by so little that those micro genres helped people find stuff they liked.

I think the best way is to find a dj with tastes similar to yours. IT takes more work to find music you like and if you find someone that has done the work for you, you don't have to waste time digging. But djs also seem to use the wrong terms so finding a dj you like is also pretty hard.
