I also agree that a lot has to do with the smaller venues.
I have 2 Dutch friends that both recently either played at a festival in SD or played at the major "EDM" club down here, and neither played at Ruby. But played at smaller different clubs.
But then again, neither of then played over the weekend in SF... |

It's possible they also don't draw well enough to play at ruby had it been a weekend....some dj's are just slide material at this point in their career. It happens, just a few years ago saw this guy that had potential play slide Sunday b4 tgiving and now he's top 10 on djmag and in earnings. Shoot even fedde le grand had to play slide before he played the big brother next door during a weekend (he actually got a turkey gig in 2008. The night before the infamous evening at ruby with mark knight, Lyndsay, Kirk, rich, and who knows who else. |

When an established name like John OO Flemming could only draw a half full room on a Friday night, you have to ask yourself if it is a strategy you want to rely on, by booking a DJ that can draw. Ruby Skye has been in business for a very long time, I am sure they have tried many things, and know what works, what doesn't work, and what gives the best return.
On the other hand, it was a cracking party that went beyond 3 am even it was a half full room at peak time. If it was Grand, or Temple, it would have been empty by 12:30. They know how to keep a party going. It will be very difficult for other venues to compete with them for EDM events.
EDM is still relatively small in Northern America. Most people who go to Ruby Skye don't know who the DJ is. In a tourist area like Union Square, it just doesn't make sense to rely on the DJ to draw a crowd. What I am saying is that the effort should be on producing a cracking party early since most people just want to go to a happening place. |

^ I dig that...but I'd like to think all will agree with this...
Regardless of who ultimately plays Friday, had DJ been announced sooner than 2 days prior to show the potential for a larger turn out would have been greater
Whoever turns out opening (say max vagina) could have shot out an email blast etc and potentially got some of his friends to check him out before the small time headliner goes on, since at this point it's pretty safe to assume it's going to be someone with less pull than say Blake Jerell(a recent last minute Friday DJ) shoot book Donald glaude, he's playing Sf sun, and if memory serves me well was booked recently for a Friday with a week or so prior to the show.
As for joof half empty, not surprising, you need dj's who play more songs than sounds. |

| I don't the point of promoting 'surprise guest' when it is revealed before the event. Isn't the point of 'surprise' to find out who it is when the artist gets on stage? :conf: |

No one ever said there was a surprise guest. It has only ever been TBA.
Don't listen to bigperf. He likes to stir things up. Getting old, actually. I remember when he didn't seem to go out of his way to stir things up. |

Sure it was a surprise guest because up until today it had yet to be announced.... Therefore it was a surprise to see it was.someone who just played ruby...(see other members response)
Stir things up? You're crazy, I did nothing wrong.there had yet to be a DJ announced for Friday, which was the same case last month. I had spoken to Lyndsay on the phone about August 18 and who might be djing since no announcement had been made/flier posted then 2 days later all over the place its ” special major surprise guest” which from the get go I stated would be Eric Prydz. Figured this might turn into a monthly thing, which it kind of did....wonder who the special major surprise guest on November 9 is? :conf: |
