Meh, he keeps looking at him exactly like that throughout the clip.
But I do agree on the 'proving that I actually do something'-theory of yours. The #trancefamily fags have always such pussies, look at that label-video that was posted in Prod where they were begging for money as a prime example. Armin should grow some balls and make a webcam vid where he calls out deadmau5 for being a ster. |

i think joel has a bit of autism. I think his main issue is that djs don't put much effort into their sets because their performances don't impact bookings and you get a bunch of egos that don't perform at a level you would expect they are being paid.
He exaggerated but i think the essence of his message is true. It takes time to be a great dj, time most spend producing because that is how you get booked. So you don't see the greatest musicianship in djing because of the system in place. so is life.
i don't know why but i like the joel. He is everything right with the dance scene. He is talented, he is not playing the game wearing the clothing doing the right interviews whoring himself to get ahead, he loves music, he isn't in it to be popular and he does everything a publicist would tell you not to do. And his interviews are interesting and candid. He shares and doesn't have that lame insecurity so many one trick artists have. And he doesn't take himself seriously. He is one of the few that hasn't changed despite the fame. Self made to a point and from Canada. He did everything himself. Everyone that rips on him are just jealous.
He is really one of the people that should be respected for keeping it real. |

I thought that comment was directed more towards Steve Angello than Deadmau5. After all, Angello did get caught playing a mixed set and his excuse was that he did it to "sync" the fireworks and the special effects/lighting.
 |

Oh yeah, I remember that now. Joel timing was at least in part becuase of Steve angello getting called out for not mixing live "as doing visuals and mixing at the same time" isn't possible.
I reckon this AVB video is part of that fallout; the whole vid trues to "explain" why he's got a laptop, why he can mix live, why he needs smpte etc. It's a little desperate, but I suppose he doesn't want to be tainted with the same brush.
I really don't know why it matters though - it's not as if AVB fans really could tell whether or even care if he just pressed play. |

| I honestly doubt djs do premixed sets to the degree people think. They have their tracks warped, there is very little that can go wrong and the backlash of getting busted is jut not worth it. If you can super impose loops to make a track, you can dj. Angelo is vsl todo it, there is no reason to not do it unless there are special circumstances. |

More like a $10,000 solution! |
I was presuming that he'd already have the usual CDJ+DJM setup and the extra $4000 is from the additional CDJs running the timecode/click track (2x $2000/CDJ-2000). Regardless, still expensive! :D |

It's not a lot of DJ's per say, but the staggering thing is that it's some major name DJ's that are really booking big gigs, and like Angello, when it becomes a big production, so much of it becomes automated.
There are DJ's that just plainly fake it (Peter Hook, Angello got caught doing it and blamed it on the "complex" requirements of his visual setup and others that just press play and add a few things on top (BT even did this in his early gig days, Chicane does this to some extent), but often they are people known for their productions doing live gigs etc.
There's really no excuse for playing premixed. I was the lighting and VJ guy for a busy/hot spot club in Toronto for over a year. It's really not that difficult. If you can program a drum machine then you work a ligting/VJ controller. Sure to maybe do lighting/visuals and DJ at the same time takes talent but it's nothing that Sander Kleineberg doesn't do now or Coldcut wasn't doing well over 10 years ago.
Get a VJ or lighting guy to tour with you if you can't or don't want to do it all.
It's plain laziness to make up for lack of talent. |

curious thing, specially i finally found out what the laptop is for... hilarious to see him chating with his tour manager i thought it was for rekordbox.
By the way there's no real difference between turning up a fader or pressing the play button but when he does the beat isn't matched, i've also a small tendence to press the play button a bit early, something that is solved in the headphones in a glimpse but if you are doing this live... you have to be extremely accurate if he is doing exactly this live props for him, it's the only challenge you face with such an equipment but... probably will switch to cdj2000 nexus soon to get rid of this minor problem. |
