Trance literally used to be (as the name suggested) about inducing a trance in the listener. Big long tracks with very slow builds and breakdowns and sets that took an hour to build up to what most tracks do today in 3 minutes. I almost feel like a lot of what early trance (up to around 2001-ish) did for me in terms of zoning out and falling into the music is what a lot of minimal, techno and tech-house sets do for me today. Trance doesn't induce a trance in me much anymore (with the exception for a rare set now and then) where I can fall into a rhythm and just dance the night away, but a good well constructed techno flavoured set seems to do it. I dunno, just my opinion.

Totally agree. It has been a long time since a live trance set actually put me into a trance. Mat Zo, which was more than a year ago, was the last trance set to do that. However, I can think of multiple recent techno and tech-house shows that have done so. E.g. Richie Hawtin; Dubfire; many of the DJs at the Sugar Beach party, including Matthew Dear, Soul Clap, Lee Foss; Art Department; Maceo Plex; Manuel De La Mare; Lawler; some smaller underground parties; during a trip to Berlin, I checked out some local DJs; and the list goes on.

I find the techno and tech-house genre as a whole much more trance inducing. For me, entering that trance/flow state has a great deal to do with dancing. Techno and tech-house elicit this movement response that I don't even necessarily control consciously. Whereas, with trance--at least, with live trance--I've recently found the music more segmented and difficult to flow to, almost as though there are scheduled interruptions.

With that being said, I'm still often able to enter that state with recorded sets. And, I will say that PVD and Ferry put on great performances at Labour of Love, and that at many points, I was able to enter . . . wait for it . . . a state of trance. :tongue3

Well said and I totally agree. I saw Richie Hawtin @ Watergate, Berlin last month and I was pretty much in trance during his whole set.

Trance parties = 100 hundred grown men crying on the dancefloor holding eachother trying to vocalize synth sounds.

who in their right mind wants to be a part of that .

I think that's a bit overstating it. Not every trance set is made up of A&B tracks laid end-to-end. :p

Lush, spacey, atmospheric house is definitely the truest "trance" music today, in my opinion.

This is Trance, Not Trance.

You guys heard this yet?

Euphorica
I like the homers that get offended by it and feel the need to let everyone know here.

I definitely agree the same has over saturated it the last oh I dunno.. 5 yrs at least. Doesnt mean there is nothing good out there.

But I hardly call elevator or discoish house/electro (or whatever) a good time. never mind dubstep lol

There was a great scene yrs ago but like anything things go in cycles. Its not dead though thats for sure.

I still rock older live sets mostly because they do just that(put you into a trance) where a lot of the new stuff is to vocally and I agree trying to hard to be epic , every track.

prog trance/trouse whatever is slightly better and has some elements of old. I used to always frequent tech,tech/house back in the day but find myself doing more so these days as it seems like trance of past.

Trance/trouse/blouse/whatever Toronto is one of the best cities in the Northeast, possibly top 10 in North America. Who cares what Europe has. Chances are they're complaining about what they have. At least you don't have to drive almost 3 hours to hear the music you love!

People complained about what Armin played in Toronto in 2001 and people complain about what Armin plays in 2012. I had a blast then and I'll have a blast on October 6th.

Toronto IS really fortunate. Some of you guys are complaining that there's not enough trance, when here in my current city of Seoul, I'd be happy to get any decent underground music. I still browse the events section of Toronto and there's so many big DJs that come, that while not necessarily be trance, are still very good DJs that play other forms of dance.

There's only one club in Seoul that brings in any international electronica DJs, and that's Ellui. This past Friday we had Sebastien Leger, who played only for two hours but before that, there was was a huge lull since early Aug. Toronto is really lucky to have awesome booking agencies that CONSISTENTLY bring in good acts over time.

You guys should be appreciative of the scene you have. I'd be forturnate to have half the DJs Tdot gets (including the usual CZ/Footwork locals) here in Seoul, as most of the DJs here play nonsense electro house in the big clubs
