So Dredd 3D is currently killing it on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download:

It might actually end up turning a profit after all, and so sequels aren't a lost hope just yet.

not to on your strawberries as such, but those figures are hardly "killing it".

Look at the other major films released around that time. Ted did double those figures in the first week alone. It will probably turn a profit in the end, but studio execs are very shortsighted when it comes to these things. It either has to be a smash to get a similar budget for the sequel, or they drastically pull back on the production values (see: dumb and dumberer for more details).

Did I actually call that?

Yeah, but Ted grossed half a billion dollars worldwide at the box office, more than 15 times what Dredd did. If we say a DVD/Blu Ray costs about $20, then Dredd has made 43% of its box office takings in DVD sales, whereas Ted only made 12% in the same amount of time. I'd say a film that tanked at the box office sitting at #1 across all formats is definitely killing it, certainly doing far better than it normally would. Dredd made about $33mil at the box office, and needs to make $50mil in total to break even, (IMDb figures) so it's now almost there. You're right in that it'll take a lot more than a film merely breaking even to persuade the studio to fork out another $50mil for a sequel, but Dredd has the feel of an instant cult classic, and even if we have to wait five years for a sequel, it could easily keep selling until it has made enough to justify a sequel.

A lot of cult classics tanked at the box office, (Bladerunner, The Thing) only to become hits years after the fact, and a lot of cult classics had brilliant sequels 5-10 years after the original (Alien, Night Of The Living Dead). The good thing about Dredd is you could easily resume the franchise in 5-10 years, because Karl Urban's chin is not going to change an awful lot, and every other character we've seen thus far is replaceable.

FYI, usually a film needs to take in about 33 percent higher than listed cost to break even for a variety of reasons, some of them legitimate ie production costs dont take into account some advertising and post production ancillary costs, and some less legitimate having to do with financial accounting measures ie they actually loan themselves the money and charge interest on it etc. Additionally, some of those receipts are not going be completely recouped by the studio etc. So it definitely needs some help to break even. That being said, if the movie gets a cult following, it becomes much easier to sell a studio on a sequel. If you see a special edition or collecters edition BR disk in the works 3-6 years down the line, its a great sign of a possible sequel as the studio now sees additional financial reward in the franchise.

Now that has shat on my strawberries.
