but song has a specific meaning. A song has words. A track can be instrumental.

Like the movie Battleship. It's just action with a lot of eye-candy, fast action and effects. Same with Transformers.

I feel like I repeat myself here quite often, but please stop thinking this.

Nothing is "just action" or "eye-candy". Through the way the action is staged, edited and narrated (yes, even action sequences are small "stories" on their own) films always communicate something.

Like, a really simple example from Battleship is that it is very important that the confrontation with aliens is framed in a "game" environment. What usually happens in films with alien invasion is that they immediately attack us without our knowing why, or there is a reason but the act of aggression from their side is inevitable. In Battleship, the aliens are not unambigously established as villains, rather their offensive action is a response to the decisions of us/humans who simply assume they're dealing with someone hostile - just like we, the viewers, assume that they are evil aliens based on our knowing of genre conventions.

Battleship quite cleverly subverts this cliché and blurs the line between good and evil while still remaining a blockbuster movie.

I thought battleship broke some serious ground in how bad a movie can be. I mean even with a big budget and somewhat competent actors, the end result was staggering. It was essentially independence day framed in some weird Hasbro board game universe.

You might as well say "Battleship was a miss!" (DO HO HO) and feel all smart and superior about it.

i was blown away, by how bad it was on so many levels. how was that.

But still you have people calling classical pieces for string quartet a song, all the time. And that goes back to my point on Joe Bloggs/Man in the street. People also call SHM techno. Doesn't make it any more true.

I feel like films and movies are different, because of what they set out to do, and because it surpasses genre. I understand not everyone here agrees with me, and I've posted an excerpt of an article to back up my point, so obviously someone agrees with me. Maybe the segregation of the terms is something that has happened too recently for some people to take notice, I don't ing know. But what I do know, is that you wouldn't have phrases like "a movie that tries to be a film" without there being a difference in meaning of those words.

This tells me more about you than it does about the film.

i suppose. Seems like a silly thing to argue about. I purposefully call anything in the classical realm a joint just to piss people off.

I knew very well it would suck. But how much was a surprise. I am amazed Liam Neeson signed up for this one. I mean i will be honest i watched less than 30 minutes. But it was painful. I mean this is the type of movie people usually walk out.

I hate you all so much right now.

I personally believe that many US Americans can't find America on a map because they don't have maps.

Again. Oh so funny, Russell. Have you ever considered going into writing? I bet a funny guy like you could make a killing writing jokes for Chuck Lorre or something!
