Which Mp3 Player is better? (pg. 2)

Ok, let me explain why I want an mp3 flash ram player. First, I already have a JVC KD-SH99 in my car, so I'm set for driving.
Second, a hard-drive unit is too heavy and fragile for me to use while working-out, and is generally much more expensive. (generally).
Third, I'll only be using it to work out to, as I have tunes in the car, and anywhere else, I have a computer around to play music. (For example, right now, all to myself I have 4 brand new IBM laptops, and 2 brand new IBM servers) (Note, I didn't buy IBM, my customer did.).. So, I don't need something that plays for hours and hours and hours.
I did look at MiniDisc's, as they're only about 2.5 times the size of the Samsung I'm looking at. The problem I see with MiniDiscs, is that they'll probably skip just as often as CD players do (from what I hear.) Also, I'm not a big fan of proprietary .
As far as technology changing, so what? It's always changing, there will always be something better and cheaper out next week, but we can't live our lives waiting right?
128 meg gives me 2 hours at 128 K, which is long enough to work out with.
So, now that I've explained why I'm looking at these mp3 players, can anyone still help? :)
Regarding the Iriver stuff, it looks nice, but I don't want or need an mp3 cd player (I love mp3 cdplayers, and I could borrow my brothers Pine one (don't remember the model), but it's not practical for my needs.)
Thanks. |

i'd still wait till they release a smaller cut mp3 CD player tho that's about the size of an MD player. imho i think that will really give MD's a run for their money. altho i can definately see ur point which is quite valid. btw. i've NEVER had a track skip on my SlimX before.. that thing is solid ! |

technically it's still prone to skipping, but in practice it's virtually skip-free. i've been using my MZ-N1 heavily since march and it never skipped. the only beef i have with NetMD (or MiniDisc in general), like dEsidEL said, is the ATRAC3 compression. the re-encoding process not only significantly delays the transfer, also means more data loss (ATRAC3 LP2 = 132kbps. i doubt you'll notice the difference thru the earbud, though, and a 128mb flash card lasts 2 hours only if it's 128kbps MP3, so that's not much an issue here). the "80-minute in 3 minutes" transfer is a bit misleading here, since it takes quite a while to re-encode songs in ATRAC3 as well. since it has to re-encode beforehand to transfer music, the faster your CPU is, the less time it takes to transfer. no, it won't make a difference if you're using USB 1.1 or USB 2.0. yea i hope other manufacturers (Sharp, Denon, Kenwood, Panasonic) will come up with a replacement for NetMD, where it uses MP3 instead of ATRAC3. but alas, Sony invented MiniDisc, and it's a record label as well... so i'm sure others have tried but got pressure from Sony.
*sighs
also, OpenMG is such a lame software i'd never use (a song transfered via OpenMG has to be renamed or deleted by OpenMG AND only OpenMG, that's for me). i transfer albums via Simple Burner, and singles via RealOne Player. but you just can't beat MiniDiscs for the price, as blank medias are for US$2 each (i bought 2 dozens in HK where it costs US$1 each :D ). but experience told me that you don't really want to overwrite an MD when it's recorded, even when it's intended to be used like a flash memory card.
so for any of you who's shopping for an MP3 player (or TranceNerd if you haven't bought an MP3 player yet), get NetMD, despite all my gripes above. 2.5 times bigger may sound scary, but my MZ-N1 fits perfectly in my trousers' back pocket. (dunno how small the Samsung unit is, but it looks pretty bulky on the photo)
Sony MZ-N505 (CDN$215 at MiniDisc Canada)
Sony MZ-N707 (CDN$330, you pay $115 more for the remote control and car kit)
Sony MZ-N1 (CDN$476.25, and future shop is selling it for $600. doesn't have a car kit.)
finally...
1. sony has just announced MZ-N10, and it's due out early next year. improvements include 64x NetMD transfer, a better software (SonicStage in favour of OpenMG), slimmer magnesium case, and the "Virtual Headphone" surround simulation. makes me wanna trade in my MZ-N1 for this.

2. wearable MZ-N1 -- MD player in a snowboard jacket.

pretty kewl, if only for the sake of technology. i mean, snowboarders who actually use the functions might be sneered upon by their peers; and for the rest of us, ain't the remote control more than enough? and the fact that it must be sold with the MZ-N1 -- which i already have -- is downright absurd. |

Ok, heres a table with the sizes and weights of a bunch of players
| Player | H(mm) | W(mm) | D(mm) | Weight w/o battery(g) | | Sony MZ-N1 | 104 | 97.3 | 40 | 215 | | Sony MZ-N505S | 74.4 | 81 | 27.9 | 104 |
| Sony MZ-N1 | 73 | 78.5 | 19.9 | 87 | | Samsung Yp-30SH | 65 | 44 | 14.5 | 34 | | RCA RD1080 | 58 | 61 | 30.5 | 57 |
(I hope that lines up right).
By the table, the yp-30sh is obviously the smallest.
Prices in order are :
S1 $329
N505S $239
N1 $599
30SH $329
1080 $249
At this point I'm leaning towards the Samsung YP-30SH. MiniDisc isn't looking good to me right now.. (After reading peoples reviews here and elsewhere.) They seem to be REALLY slow transferring (converting) and some people speak of errors encoding the music.
The amount of time on a MD is less, 80 mins verses 120 at 128 MB. (This would be using LP2 (I think), as LP4 seems to be crap).
The Samsung looks a lot more solid (physically) compared to the RCA. It's also smaller and lighter than any of the other models...
Due to the fact that I'm looking at 120 mins or 80 mins, or even 320 mins (at LP4), I would conclude that I'll be transferring music it to it often, almost daily. This means transfer time is important, and MD isn't looking good.
So based on these assumptions/conclusions, I think I'll be getting a Samsung YP-30SH tomorrow..
Unless anyone can present any further evidence, I thank you all for your contributions and assistance at this difficult time of Choosing.

Damn guys, what r u talking about, high technology...bla bla bla, i wish i had cash to buy high end stuff....
I bought KOSS mp3 discman for 89.99 @ costco....working fine for last half a year, left it in the black car on the open sun couple of times and nothing..that maybe does not sound the best, i mean not high end sound, but for in-car use mp3 player it is perfect.
So if ya donnt wanna spend money just go to Costco and get yourself a GOOD for the money discman...
It has only one problem, FAST FORVARD on that thing is slow, and when u want to FAst Forward a set like DUTCH DIMENTION it will take hours to get to the middle. I had to break all the set into pieces. |

wow, didn't know you could use HTML tags as well.

damn wrong, 80 minutes is for SP mode. so for a 80-minute disc...
SP = 80 minutes
LP2 = 160 minutes <-- what you should use
LP4 = 320 minutes
how would you record PvD's 2002 Rosenmontags set (167mb, 122 minutes) into a 128mb MP3 player? heh. it'd be best to get half a dozen of 74-minute discs and use them as rewritable media, and use a couple of 80-minute discs for mix compilations or stuff you wanna keep for a while longer. the converting process is annoying but i'm getting used to it. also remember that for an MP3 player, you can't play your music anywhere else, whilst there're plenty of hi-fi stereos (and car stereos) with MD decks. but in the end, weigh between NetMD and MP3, and buy what pleases YOU most. |

. I just typed some out, but this damn crappy IBM laptop has no winkey, so I hit Ctrl-R instead of Win R, and lost all my precious words.
Oh well, here I go again:
Regarding HTML tags, I didn't know either, but I tried em, and they worked. Note that it places any carriage returns before the html, so I put the whole table as one line of text.
Regarding LP2. My bad. Still, it's only about 34% more time than a 128 meg card.
If you read my other posts, I don't need to play the music anywhere else, I have an in-dash mp3cd player, and more computers than you can shake a stick at.
I can strap the lil' mp3 players to my wrist, or to my belt. (I don't always have pockets in my shorts when I work out, nor do I always wear a belt... in fact.. I don't think I've ever worn a belt at the gym, so I may need to strap it to my arm, or hand it from my neck, or tuck it in a sock. :) ).
Yeah, I think I've reasoned MiniDiscs out... Thanks anyway Sony. :) |

yea an arm strip is best for your situation. tuck it in a sock? ha, that's funny, bet you never tried that, 'cos your headphone cord has to be ridiculously long (just think), and you gotta wear socks about the length of christmas stockings. :haha: :haha: and hell no, i ain't a Sony advocate. |

| Personally I would get the IRiver SlimX. Because I store all of my mp3s on a CD anyway. SlimX supports WMA (which has a great potential, because it compresses music better than mp3s and still keeps the same music quality), Mp3s, and CDs. You can burn 7 hour sets on a CD :). Most importantly it is slim ^_^. However, I hear that the battery life of a SlimX is terrible. |

the batteries on my SLim X hav never run out even after listening to full livesets going to school and coming back on the commute .. as well as in the library when studying..
and if it (rechargeables) ever does there's a backup powerpack for AA batteries..
plus the player is as versatile as the MD in terms of being able to play it 'anywhere', there is a lineout for AUX if ur car deck as a port in which cases most decks now do. Plus there are a lotta car deck mp3 CD players, and home unit mp3 CD players in fact more abundant than MD player decks being sold here which makes it perfect in terms of transferring the CD's over when ur mobile. |
