or u could wait till they release smaller versions that play off those smaller cut 210 MB CDz.. take that MD !!

and u cooould do with a HD mp3 player as Az mention .. but u'll be kickin urself hard in the ass if that were to ever fall outta ur pocket on the bus or somewhere outside hehe.. the iRiver player is under $300 and less of a liability in case of theft or damage..

OMG an MD vs. mp3 vs. CD thread... lol

I can't believe desidel is taking more stabs at MD players!! aghh! not to mention taking stabs at mp3 players too

Fieroavian is the man.. MDs all the way, lol :D

I don't want to go through all the pros and cons of MDs, but just to put it this way -- I find that it suits all my needs at the moment. I have no problems with the speed of transfer, skipping, and loss of audio quality. I stocked up on MDs for $1 US a piece when I was down in the States, and these things can carry 80 mins at top bitrates. Under LP2 compression, using very detailed headphones (using V6s), the sound quality is tolerable; with portable headphones (using MX500s, KSC-35s, KSC-55s, etc.) the difference in sound quality is negligible. I still have the same battery (single AA) in there since the beginning of August, whereas my Mp3-CD player used to eat up batteries every other day. I can use the MD player to record live conversations as well as record from various types of analog media as opposed to just recording digitally from the computer. MDs can be played elsewhere on MD decks, home MD players, other people's MD players, and they are very compact and transportable. The portability and versatility is great in my opinion. The major problem I have with MDs is that Sony has the monopoly in this market :whip:

I definitely wouldn't mind owning some of the mp3 players and CD players listed below, but I'm perfectly satisfied with MDs at the moment :)

haha Bizz ! bout time u get involved in this ruckus .. :P

honestly tho .. i got nothing to beef with MD cept one thing .. ATRAC3!!!

that stupid ass compression has NO technological advantage whatsoever and only exists to FORCE u into encoding for copyright protection purposes. I'm sure that other MD makers, ie. Sharp, etc. want to build in mp3 algorithms but then Sony would sue their ass ! i also find that a lot of ppl opt for MD over mp3 merely for cosmetic reasons and not for funtionality.. itz hurts as much as buying an iMac! haha kz maybe i shouldn't go that far .. :]

anyhow, this is all Sony'z fault .. get rid of them and their ATRAC3 and i'll be buying an MD :]

aghhhhhh how can you say something like that?!? lol.. iMacs and MDs do not belong in the same category!

In my opinion it's the otherway around. You have all these mp3 players boasting about their aesthetics (e.g. how small they are compared to everything else).. I bought my MD player solely because of its functionality (explained two posts above) and it just happened to look really fancy because Sony made it :o

I wouldn't say size is part of aesthetics. Appearances are. Size can have a practical application. MD players are smaller than CD players, so they had an advantage back before any of these portable mp3 players existed.

And even though I don't like MD players, I don't think they're quite as bad as imacs. :)

Well what I meant to say is that mp3 players seem to advertise more of their appearance such as being sleek, portable and stylish -- I just said this as a rebuttal to Desidel's statement that people buy MD players for their cosmetics as opposed to their functionality ;)

juss in case any of youz audiophiles are still following this debate..

CanadaComputers is selling the NAPA mp3 CD player - 8 CM version for $99 bucks. The player is only slightly larger than an MD and plays off those 8 CM CDR's that hold about 210 MB. So at 128 k sample rate, that's about 220 minutes (compared to 160 mins on a NetMD at LP2) of audio right there which should take you about under 5 minutes to burn on your CD writer which you probably already own .. :D

ahh, come on. 8cm CDs are harder to get, and they skip too. but since CD burners are so ubiquitous, i guess it'll appeal to low-budget buyers.

oh yea, another thing i hafta point out is that unless there're 8cm CD-RWs and the NAPA CD player actually reads them, it'll be a nightmare to buy (and stack) hundreds of CDs.

P.S. - dEsidEL, i ain't an audiophile. my DJ headphones are the notouriously bad quality Sony MDR-V700, and my monitors are a lowly pair of altec lansing 2.1. hahaha, go figure!!

heh, they're actually pretty common these days, i see them everywhere especially at Futureshop :]
plus, i've NEVER had an mp3 playing on a CD skip on my SlimX before, the skip protection is something like 2 minutes which is crazy.. altho i don't know how the Napa rates on that area tho but i will definately check out some reviews on it..

oooooh.. not yet, atleast i haven't seen any 8CM CD-RW's but i'm sure they aren't far around the corner! In anycase, if i was in the position of being a NAPA owner i would probably just burn my favourite sets i listen to most and the rest back up on normal CD's.. besides 210 MB per disc would only be maybe 2-3 discs in your bag which should cover the commute to and from school. I mean how many MD's would you carry with you on average ?? probably not that many as well!

Ok I need some help with my Sony mz-505 md player and OpenMG.

When I try to copy my trance mp3s to my md player I get a copyright error message. When I try to copy my hip hop/r&b stuff it copies fine. What's going on?

I read you guys talking about compression and such, but I just don't really understand that stuff, so what I'm really trying to ask
Is there any way to get around this?

Thanks!

Here is what you need to do. You'll need to get a program like Soundfoundry's ACID, and recreate your mp3 file.

Here is how to check whether a song is copyrighted or not. Basically, if you open winamp, highlight any song, then right-click on it, and when the pop-up menu appears, select View file info. Now if you click on the MPEG Details tab there is a label which shows whether or not this particular song is copyrighted.

Hope this helps

does anyone know if its possible to record a mix set to a minidisc using a cue file so I don't have to cut up the set into different files manually? (preferably on OpenMG)

I got a good deal on a Samsung MCD-SM60 at CompuSmart. $99. MP3-cd player, good quality, good display. There is a small problem that it cannot properly play full-stereo mp3 files but if they are encoded as joint stereo they play fine. Also the fast-forward is slow (my last cd player had a great fast forward, a panasonic cd player).
