Texting while out with others (pg. 4)

I think it's such a nerdy/geeky behavior, but the ubiquity has made it "social." That says a lot to me. Back in the mid 90s, you'd be considered some kind of computer freak if you behaved this way. Now that everyone is social networking/tweeting and has a cellphone, it's 100% fine to be socially inept with your eyes glued to a screen.
If a large group of people (especially women) consider something lame or nerdy, then it is. But if those same people do lame, nerdy bull, who the are you to expect decency from them? So many popular people are dorks, just like the rest of us, they just feel that they can get away with it for whatever reason. Look at Youtube comments (actually, don't), I'm sure many of the most atrocious ones come from people who think they're the in real life.
It's hard to take life seriously when so many people are full of . :stongue: |

I just don't care whether someone texts someone else when they're out with me. I do it too. It'd be annoying to have someone complaining about it because they're not getting enough attention, i.e. all of it. It absolutely is selfish to expect that whoever you're out with ignore everything else in the world but you. As much as you think they're too wrapped up in social media, you're equally wrapped up in yourself to expect someone to block out the entire pervasive nature of social media just because they're in your presence. Anyone who expects that is just an attention whore. |

| I've never had someone text to the point of outright ignoring me (yet. I hope never). If someone seemed aloof but wasn't texting, I'd feel more slighted than someone texting and talking. People are spread too thin today, I can't expect all people to give me their full attention, they have lives too. |

Actually she was a music journalist and went to the trouble of hunting down some of my writing after we'd first met, so I'm pretty sure my ruminations on epic house made her moist.
I've no problem with someone replying to texts or updating their Facebook while we're hanging out, but I think everyone who isn't a social retard recognises that this shouldn't happen mid-conversation. You do stuff like that during convenient moments when the other person has gone to the bar or the toilet or whatever. To around endlessly with your phone whilst talking is the equivalent of picking up a magazine and reading it while talking, or even phoning someone else and talking down the line at the same time. Just because it's happening silently on a small screen doesn't alter the effect. Mentally, that person is no longer fully invested in the conversation, and that is little more than an affront. There is a difference between being annoyed by that and GIVE ME 100% OF YOUR ATTENTION ALL THE TIME, and if you weren't such a monumental cretin you'd realise that. |

| That's quite the paragraph just to explain why it annoys you that people are so disinterested in what you have to say that they would rather play with their phone. I agree with you that this shouldn't happen mid-conversation, but I can't say that I'd blame someone for doing it with you, given some of the insipid dross that you find interesting. |

| A guy who made about 100 replies in one thread telling everyone how little he cared is accusing me of putting too much effort into being butthurt. Priceless. |

| I didn't say butthurt, I said boring. Though admittedly, it doesn't seem like it requires much effort on your part. |

| Technically you guys are texting right now, if you think about it. I don't even know who wins, in that case. |

| I feel at a disadvantage in this argument because I get so bored after System's first sentence that I have to update my Twitter to let everyone know that my dog just sneezed and it was so adorable. #stoptextingandlookatme #adorable #i'mbored |

Am I the only one not using any social medias such as Twitter, Facebook et cetera?
OT: Don't really mind people checking their mobiles from time to time, but when some guy (read: in my entourage) stands in the middle of the dance-floor to tinker with his phone, it's a bit pathetic, really. |
