tried just 45 minutes
9.1.8
mac pro - mac pro direct connection with manual IP setting
macbook to mac pro via airport express same subnet with manual IP settings on both.
it is detected. There are no error messages. The nodes say connected. The plugins have node enabled. The track has node clicked but where you should see a green ---- , you only see grey. ----
and this is as far as anyone i know has every got. I have a feeling the situation you had had a technician do something extra, something that isn't in any manual for it to work because it isn't just me. But ya, this would actually be pretty awesome for the EDM stuff i'm doing right now.
all nodes have 9.1.8 in their version.plist
edit. just tried the imac with a long cat 6 and same thing. They are all detected on both sides. You can select them. But thats as far as it goes. |

ah ing hell.
I disabled all the node settings on every plugin except 2. And it worked. |

Bingo.
So now both you and I are the only people on earth who got nodes to work ;)
Here's two other things that stop it from working:
1, Switch off airport before launching logic or nodes. When both are up and running, then switch on airport again.
2, Sometimes, it is actually working but displays that it's not - only happens the first time you press play on a track.
here's the apple ticket for the known fault:

| what do you mean by airport. the hub ? i don't actually have the wireless on. |

The wifi on all macs. Switch it off.
Where'd you go? I know you went out. I saw you. |

| they are connect via hub ie airport express. Well the mac pros are connected directlly and also to the hub and then the others are to the hub. |

Just saw an 8 core (2010) with 128GB SSD, 3x1TB spinners and 12GB RAM go on Ebay for £1400.
That's the price sweetspot for me I think. |

Buy it locally. You need to do a battery of tests to make sure it is proper. eBay will always claim it was working and the issue is software.
I would just get an iMac. Same price, just as good and a warranty which when you spend that much money is relaxing.
My 2009 can handle more than the 2010 btw. Both are identical except for chip and board. I think the old ram risers were just better. Kinda weird but ya, audio related stuff doesn't really do nor,al things and benchmark results mean little. |

You probably know this but... Check out the classified section on soundonsound because you tend to get musicians/producers selling macs there and you can obviously look/test the hardware before you buy. Plus you can haggle.

Also, apple refurbs sometimes sell mac pros. You'll get a years warranty there too and then chuck in your own hard drives.
Gumtrees another option.
Personally I wouldn't eBay something like a Mac Pro, I'd rather see it in the flesh first but that's me. |

Yeah I look on SOS a lot, and even Ebay I'll only look at if it could be a local cash deal.
That's the great thing about living in the UK, most of the country is only a couple of hours drive ;)
I'm assuming you can buy Applecare for a used machine?
And I really don't want an iMac. Unless it's dirt cheap. And even then I really don't want one. |

| I think that was a typo but no, apple care is only for new stuff. So anything happens to your mac pro at this point will cost so much to fix that you might as well get a new computer. The logic boards are 1000$. They never go down in price. |

You buy AppleCare within the 1st year of the purchased mac from apple which is registered with the hardware. I say up to a year because you get a years warranty with apple. You can sell a mac with AppleCare.
This link should tell you if the hardware has registered AppleCare if you know the serial number, although I've never tried it.

Noticed loads of people selling cheap AppleCare on eBay so be careful incase the seller says AppleCare and EBay in the same sentence, the chances are it could be a dodgy serial.
And yeah, apple motherboards are ing ridiculously overpriced so AppleCare can be a big bonus in the long run. Chances are you'd upgrade 3 years down the line anyway. |
