Hmm this is not just about one woman. there is a much bigger picture here.
Here are some of their concerns:
quote:
The Treaties are nation to nation agreements between Canada and First Nations who are sovereign nations. The Treaties are agreements that cannot be altered or broken by one side of the two Nations. The spirit and intent of the Treaty agreements meant that First Nations peoples would share the land, but retain their inherent rights to lands and resources. Instead, First Nations have experienced a history of colonization which has resulted in outstanding land claims, lack of resources and unequal funding for services such as education and housing.
Canada has become one of the wealthiest countries in the world by using the land and resources. Canadian mining, logging, oil and fishing companies are the most powerful in the world due to land and resources. Some of the poorest First Nations communities (such as Attawapiskat) have mines or other developments on their land but do not get a share of the profit. The taking of resources has left many lands and waters poisoned – the animals and plants are dying in many areas in Canada. We cannot live without the land and water. We have laws older than this colonial government about how to live with the land.
Currently, this government is trying to pass many laws so that reserve lands can also be bought and sold by big companies to get profit from resources. They are promising to share this time…Why would these promises be different from past promises? We will be left with nothing but poisoned water, land and air. This is an attempt to take away sovereignty and the inherent right to land and resources from First Nations peoples.
There are many examples of other countries moving towards sustainability, and we must demand sustainable development as well. We believe in healthy, just, equitable and sustainable communities and have a vision and plan of how to build them.
Moral Hazard
I fear that this will suffer the same fate as the Occupy movement... too many people pushing too many differnt agendas resulting in the messages being muddled and lost.
I have great sympathy for our reserve natives; however, they should focus on getting their own together first... the gov't throws a ton of money into reserves but so much of it gets misappropriated or misspent; priority one should be addressing their internal problems.

something is really out of whack.
In 2006, Aboriginal people in Canada - First Nations, Métis and Inuit - surpassed the one-million mark, reaching 1,172,790. A lot of them don't live in Native reserves. With population increase and what not, let's say 1,200,000 for 2012. http://www12.statcan.ca/census-rece...d/ap-pa-eng.cfm
That's about $6168 per person per year spent on top of all the regular stuff a Canadian citizen gets. (plus extra benefits Aboriginal person is entitled to)
Just what is being done with this money?
FunkyCrew
so they want more $$ (royalties for Canadians using their land for mining, etc) on top of what is already being channeled into the communities?
sounds really fishy to me.

Money is part it BUT problem but their main issue is that the Harper government has been changing the old treaties without consulting the natives.Lack of communication is their main concern here and also the government's lack of respect for the environment. The media has been very good twisting and turning their main message and making it seem as if this movement is all about wanting more $$ from the government.
Spence is surviving on water, fish broth, medicinal tea and some vitamins during her hunger strike near Parliament Hill, which will continue until next week’s meeting.

Thats not what it is sorry. Thats simply your opinion. She is fighting for a great cause for her people. she has made all the natives around the world to unite and work together with one voice.

I have sympathies for the Natives too, but I have hard time supporting a cause using deception and deceit

Isn't the whole point of a hunger strike to get attention? It certainly seems like its getting a lot of people talking...
I don't know the ins and outs of this, but I do know that for whatever reason, native people in this country seem to be having a hard time, and it's been like that for as long as I can remember. If this woman can change that somehow, or makes things a little bit better for her community by not eating, I wish her luck.
