what kind of djs are you hanging around? The use of FX for mixing and transitioning is a classic top 40 and maybe a hip hop dj thing. Most electronic music djs stay away from the use of fx during transitions. Its the classic allen heath versus pioneer high end mixer debate. Pioneer is the industry standard bc its preferred by most top 40 djs but most every big name in electronic music prefers the allen heath bc of the fact that they could give a for all the fx and just want that 4th filter that will allow smother mixing of two dance tracks.

So damn true. The DJs that I hung around are exactly as you mentioned--- just top 40 hiphop djs that focus sooo much on all the technical and fancy aspects of mixing. I respect it, but I believe EDM doesnt require such technique since all the effects of a song are already in the production of the track.

I honestly could care less about all the fancy techniques. I guess we live in different worlds. The Top 40 DJs vs EDM DJs. I dont know, but I'm more focused on the content than the technical side of things.

so yeah, wow. you nailed it man.

Have you ever considered that people might tell you that you suck because they don't like your "bomb ass tracklist"? There are tons of ways to spice up sets without needing an fx unit.

What genres are you playing? Does what you're playing fit the venue? I'm not accusing just wondering.

i don't see the connection between technical ability and using fx.

I think the ability of djs that make a living vary so much that it does tend to highlight the aspect of ability in that some are really bad but the nature of what they do is so hard to quantify or judge at least the average drugged addled clubber that has been told by a flyer that this dj is the best dj you will hear this week.

Part of the problem is the whole producers having to dj. Their ability to dj is based on their ability to produce and they are not really that related as most would think. I also think djs should be as able as say other musicians in other fields and although there are many that have put in similar hours and have both technical and musical skills, there are way too many that don't have either.

THe same dicussion happens with every instrument. Some people focus on technique beyond the benifits technique brings. There is usually a threshold. rather high that most reach say after 10 years and then those that continue on this quest for technique forget about the music side and end up making ty fusion music.

Here is an example.

When musicians pass that technique threshold, they eventually all end up making ty fusion porno music.

But i would imagine this is less offensive than listening to a bunch of 10 year olds with no technique ing about.

I don't think it's possible to listen to that music and not think about some chick getting railed in a cheesy 90's porno.

its seems funny but all the best players make that kind of music. I mean you would have to define best but there is this sort of cutoff in terms of being too good that you sacrifice taste in the process and all those guys end up making really sappy jazz fusion. It is challenging music to play and it is more of a circle jerk than a performance. They aren't playing for anyone but themselves.

there are a few that hover over that line that do both ie pop album recordings then do this stuff on the side but ya, its usually more of a curse to be too good.
Dykes_on_Jay
just say black people clooney.
Looney4Clooney
black people seem to be immune somewhat to the white musician wanker trend. But their are tons of black guys wanking just as hard. They just tend to look better doing it.
Dykes_on_Jay
i do ok, but i only jerk off in the bathroom. the handicapped bathroom.

Years back I was really hammered one day and made a thread on discogs about black people being better than whites at making "fun" music. That went over well as you could imagine.
Looney4Clooney
i'm talking strictly about good musicians as they age. White people tend to become incredibly lame and wankery, black guys somehow keep some of their cool.

In terms of skill, i would say black culture as sort of lost its tradition with music due to overwhelming poverty, single mother families and the sort of new idols that appeal to that culture which tends to not encourage the sort of learning all those great session players had prior. There was a point were the best musicians were pretty much all black. Not so much anymore.

i was cherry picking but this kinda illustrates what i'm talking about
