I'm wide awake at 10am and 10pm, no matter what time I go to sleep prior. I've tried to accommodate my sleeping patterns around this oddity.

I recall reading something years back (it may have been here on TA, actually) about how humans weren't meant to have a solid sleep wake cycle....rather that it's more efficient to sleep for 4-5 hours with periods of wakefulness and activity in between. Something to do with nomads and REM sleep. Anyone know what I'm talking about? :o

I think you should record it, and post it every time you want to issue a warning instead of an actual post. Lolololol.

I usually need at least 10-12 hours to feel fully rested. Schedule's been so ed up though. Usually go to bed around 5-8am and sleep til 2-4pm.

The caffeine thread has me wondering, what are your sleep habits like? How much sleep is ideal for you/how many hours do you need a night to function optimally? What's the minimum amount of sleep you need just to get through the day? And do you nap or practice relaxation regularly?

If you ignore the time zone I live in, I have a quite normal sleep cycle: I sleep around 8 hours a day (9 hours if I'm really tired), and I sleep any less than that, I can function properly, though less than 6 hours will make me walk around like a zen monk - smiling at random people and just looking blissfully stupid :p

I hardly ever take a nap.

Now, if you know anything about me, you know my sleep cycle would be perfect... if only I lived in Vancouver (sometimes even further west). I go to bed at any time ranging from 2 AM to 5 AM, and wake up accordingly from 10 AM to 1 PM. My wife is incredibly annoyed by this and I try to go to bed early (i.e. after 1 AM), but I suck at this.

When I lived alone, I'd often wake up and go teach my 2 PM classes right away. I come from a family of owls (and, likewise, Kaoru comes from a family of larks).

Sleep deprivation sometimes is one of my favorite feelings ever. It's like putting a dreamy glow on reality. Other times it's just draining and I have no energy. I'm sure it has to do with sleep cycles, but I'd love to know exactly how to time it so I can get the good kind.

I can totally relate to this :)

I don't have sleep "habits", there is no pattern.

I've had trouble sleeping ever since I can remember. It's awful. I envy the people who can just put their heads on a pillow and fall asleep easily.

When I do finally fall asleep, I need at least 8 hours to feel refreshed and functional the next day (preferably 10 hours). But I can "somewhat" function on 6-7 hours of shut-eye. Any less than that and I'm completely zombified.

As for naps, I hardly take any, unless I'm so exhausted that my eyelids feel like I'm holding the weight of Jupiter on them.

The room in which I sleep has to be dead silent and pitch black, otherwise I cannot sleep.

Fun, huh.. -_-

Yeah, there's a couple books on the subject, and this rather good BBC article:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16964783

If I wake up in the middle of the night and feel wide awake I'll frequently grab a book and read for an hour or so. Often need to remind myself to go back to sleep lol

If I had my way, I'd go to sleep around 3 am every night and wake up at 9. I much prefer being awake at night than the morning. I don't really have a strict schedule I keep myself to, though. Often will have 4 hours of sleep one night and then 12 hours the next. I like to average between 6-8 hours.

The technical term for these people is "bastards."

I don't often nap, unless I've been day-drinking and, for some reason, stop.

I also tend to sleep listening to the news (on my iPod). Often fall asleep before it ends - it's really confusing when you hear the European Union is studying a new way to JESUS CHRIST, IS THAT A UNICORN!? :p
