This week it is killing me though. I actually fell asleep during one of my classes. It was only for a really short time during one of my student's presentations. They woke me up by poking me. I joked that if they were more interesting, it would not have happened. I even had full drool mode going. |
that's ing excellent. |

Jay, are you making tons of money over there? That's a ton of work, mate. |
I only do 30 hours over 7 days...but the placement of these hours (+ travel time, preparation time/clerical work) makes it feel like more. Not having a total " off" day sucks...but whatever. I would be comfortable with this salary back in Canada. Here I can live a much higher quality of life and bank more.
Working for myself also has it perks. I can pick and choose jobs. Taxes also don't pose the same problem as I don't pay anything near what i did in Canada (think 2 to 5% depending on my gig). Minus my very minimal overhead (materials, driver, etc) everything I make goes into my pocket. I don't plan to work like this forever, but my business is only 6 months old and I have to keep networking and building a bigger client book so that I can start hiring out and taking a cut.
The cost of living comparison is insane. I'll give you a rough breakdown.
My fee is roughly 50 CDN per hour. More for SAT, TOEFL, AB...etc, because those take a lot of preparation on my part. I'm not a genius, but if you are properly prepared and have a good methodology, you can teach anything successfully.
My costs (roughly) to give an idea of how cheap things are here.
Driver: 45$ a week
Maid: 4 times a week at 3 hours per = 60$ a month.
Rent: 3 bedroom condo (including management fee.) 700$ a month. In Montreal, it would easily cost me 1500$ for a place like this. I also have a classroom in one of the rooms. I rent it out to friends if I am making house calls.
Utilities: A real joke. Electricity during "winter" is only like 40$ a month. In summer, running the AC here non stop....75. It is bloody hot. I just paid for a year up front of the best internet service available in my area. 150$ for the whole year. Epic lol. Water and gas are less than 10$ a month.
Groceries: I can eat like a king for 60$ a week. A nice restaurant will set me back 70$ at most for 2 people (including bottle of wine...no tip here, but i usually leave something anyways.) I ate Mickey D's for lunch today. Like a pig. 1 double cheeseburger sausage meal, single cheeseburger, 5 nuggets. 4$. I'm a big motherfucker...don't judge me.
Mandarin private teacher: 30$ a month.
Korean private teacher: 45$ a month.
So yeah, its worth it. Next year, if I keep growing at this rate I will have a more relaxed schedule with better earnings. I might have black rings around my eyes like a bloody panda, but it's now or never. Down time just makes me misbehave anyways. I'll get a gig playing once in awhile here or in Hong Kong, and it covers my rent. Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis. My social life suffers though. Getting laid is really easy, but having the time to devote to someone is not. |

Yeah if I'm gonna get blazed I basically need to take the whole day off, lol. Friend invited me over to smoke a j and I had to pass because I knew I wanted to go to the gym later.
I actually love rotting on my couch on my days off, having Netflix sessions and napping periodically. I wish I was a cat! |
napping means tugging in norwegian. |

Good for you, Jay, that's awesome. I've got another friend over there doing the same thing as you, but he started a couple years earlier. He got lucky with real-estate deals he made with the extra money he was saving, now has some huge penthouse and a chain of tutors working for him in some god forsaken city on the coast. Keep it up and take over that damn country :) |

LMAO, same with my girl. She can even do it while watching a fully engaging film. Awake, then BAM. Gone. |
I totally do not get how people do this. My gf is the same way. |

Why are you embarrassed about me recording my voice as a joke? Or are you embarrassed for me? I've done it plenty of times before, on TA :p No shame, either :o |

Doesn't someone have you yelling at them as a ringtone or alarm clock alert or something? I seem to remember an old-ish youtube video of it. |

I have no trouble falling asleep either...and I can sleep pretty much anywhere. Lately I've been having the most amazing sleeps - because I fully exhaust myself during waking hours.
We also got a new mattress last year, so I'm sleeping all the way through the night again. There were a couple years where I woke up a couple times a night and got wicked shoulder/trap pain at least once a month....all because of the terrible mattress we had. Only time in my life I ever had trouble sleeping and it was awful. I feel for people who have sleep problems. :/ |
